SUNDAY / FRIENDLY CRICKET.

Sunday June 10th Vs SHIP SHOP

In a match played in a fine spirit Hythe were grateful to a fine 57 from Matt Howe as the backbone behind an eighteen run Hythe win over Ship Shop in a closely fought 40 over match.

Matches against Ship Shop have always been close and this was no exception. It is hard to believe that none of their players play league cricket.

Hythe won the toss and were soon in trouble to the left arm bowling of L.Shepherd - losing Gates, Taylor and the inform Grobler early on. Under 17 colts Matt Howe 57 and James Page 20 improved the situation and Sean Tongs 32 took the score over the 120 mark.

Hythe's tail then started to crumble but Robbie James 15* and Luke Mills 8* took the score to 158 for 8 at the close.

Obviously concerned by the low score Taylor opened with Grobler and Stevens jnr who particularly was wayward in his first spell.

Robbie James bowled his usual tidy spell and picked up 2 wickets and when Powell went for 24 off his 4 overs the game was evenly balanced with Ship Shop 84 for 4.Grobler and Stevens returned to pick up 3 wickets between them but Ship Shop recovered once again to get within a shouting distance before Taylor brought himself on and Tom Gates to wrap up the tail.

A good win for Hythe considering they were defending an average score. With a bigger score it would have enabled Taylor to bowl Punchey, Lee and Russell more as they clearly need to bowl more to get out of their sticky spells. 30% of the bowling was done by the top 3 batsman which is not what Sunday cricket is about.

Robbie James, Russell Moore, Matt Howe and Nardus Grobler all picked up catches whilst Pete Stevens jnr supported his claim for the Stumpy Award this year with 3 clean bowleds. Robbie James 1 and Nardus Grobler 2 also hit the stumps.
