A below strength Hythe side put in a very good performance before going down by just 13 runs to Southern League New Milton on Monday evening.
With only Nardus Grobler as a first team recognised bowler Hythe were further hampered by a nasty injury to Chalky White which left then a bowler and fielder short.
Hythe struck early and Grobler was at his best to take 3 early wickets. Simon Wright bowled a good spell uphill and some Dave Guymer chipped in with two wickets. Some decent fielding as well enabled Hythe to restrict the Southern League side to 113 for 8 which they would have settled for at the start of play.
In reply Hythe got off to a bad start when Kev James was out in the first over. Grobler looked in good nick but at the other end wickets were tumbling quickly as Simon Wright and Sean Tongs were both triggered. Things improved when Dave Guymer joined Grobler but just as Hythe seemed to be in with a chance Grobler too was triggered for a fine 23. Guymer continued to play his shots but as the light faded the task became harder. Hythe's chances too faded when Guymer was bowled for a impressive 35 and with the tail chasing a tall order the wickets tumbled and with only 10 men available to bat the innings closed at 100 all out. But a decent effort from Robbie James side.
