HYTHE SUNDAY XI

Sunday 3rd June Vs GOSPORT BOROUGH

Hythe Beaten By a Aussie and a Pie Chucker

Funny old game - Hythe went down to their first Sunday defeat of the season against Gosport this afternoon by 73 runs in a game they lost themselves. Chasing 228 after 14 overs, a ton on the board and Grobler going well they looked favourites to win.

Despite only having 9 men at the begining Gosport won the toss and elected to bat first. Their openers especially their aussie S.Montgomery got them off to a good start. Grobler was brought on quicker than expected to give us a fascinating battle between the two overseas players. Montgomery won the battle going onto make 135 not out as the Hythe bowlers struggled in the sun. Gosport went onto to make 228 abley helped by 22 off Dingers last over and more than a handful of dropped catches which didn't assist the Hythe cause.

Alan Taylor picked up 2 wickets with probably his worst two deliveries and the one plus of the afternoon was the second spell from Pete Stevens jnr who picked up 3 late wickets all cleaned bowled.

In reply Hythe got off to a good start with Grobler deciding whatever the aussie could do then he can do as well as he launched 6 sixes out the park. At 14 overs Hythe looked in a good position with the 100 up and Grobler in charge. But veteran Tony Stares had other ideas. Forget the gammy hip and bowling off two paces - he decided that pie chucking was going to win the day and the Hythe batsman took the bait.

Grobler was well caught for 78 and Bell and Matt Howe were also well caught but Stares and the impressive Emerson saw off the rest of the Hythe batting as they folded for just 158 to game which was played as always in a very good spirit
