Day To Forget As Hythe Suffer At Ellingham

On a cold damp windy day at Ellingham what could go wrong did go wrong for Hythe and from the moment they lost an important toss and were asked to bat first things conspired to send Hythe to a dismal 9 wicket defeat.

Hythe lost Kev James with just 10 on the board, but Rob James and skipper Si Dixon took the score to 43 before Dixon was caught and bowled by Edwards, and two balls later Simon Wright (including new bat) was unfortunately run out without facing a ball when a strong drive from James deflected off the bowler on to the stumps with Wrighty short of his ground.

Ben Kendrick joined James and the pair looked to finally get Hythe on top as they took the visitors up to 75, but then James was adjudged lbw in Shutlers last over for a good looking 37, and shortly afterwards Kendrick was bowled around his legs for 20. Last weeks hero Dave Guymer was then disastrously run out for just 2, and two balls later Nardus Grobler compounded matters buy holing out for 0 with Hythe's innings in tatters at 82-7 Paul Whitlock and Richie Froggett steadied the ship briefly before at 100 Whitlock clipped a half volley off his legs straight to square leg, Froggett though was looking comfortable and took the score to 117 but was then harshly given out lbw for 22, youngsters Luke Mills and James Page batted well and managed to get Hythe up to a final total of 126 before Mills was last man out.

In reply Hythe needed early wickets, but despite some near misses and tidy bowling from Grobler and Froggett the Ellingham openers Spry & Redfern managed to repel Hythe's attack at 42-0 Hythe brought on Whitlock but more bad luck for the visitors as he was only able to bowl the one over before his back injury flared up again.

Kendrick finally made the breakthrough at 51 having Spry caught by Guymer, but Redfern riding his luck at times continued playing shots, Dixon made some bowling changes and Rob James was desperately unlucky not to pick up Redfern but nothing was going the visitors way, and sensible batting on the vastly improving wicket by Baldwin 25* and Redfern 74* got Ellingham home by 9 wickets with plenty of overs to spare.
