UNDER 11'S Vs O.T's & ROMSEY

6th May @ Jones Lane, Hythe

OT’s and Romsey Take The Spoils…..

Two evenly matched sides opened the new season at Under 11 level at jones lane, Hythe on a rather chilly damp day .

Hythe were able to field newcomers Marc Reid / Alex Nicholas and Jack Knight-Owen in the starting line up as some seasoned campaigners were missing but they all performed on debut..

Josh, skippering the side for the 1st time elected to bat after winning the toss and himself and Connor opened the batting to try and give Hythe a good start… Over 1 complet and Hythe were still in the positive but the impressive bowling of C holmes pegged the lads back in the 2nd over by clean bowling Connor as he looked to hit over the top. Runs were hard to come by as the opening pair of OT’s bowlers bowled a tight line with no wides conceeded. A run out in the 4th over after again positive had been reached meant the opening pair finished on 198 after 4 overs not the start we needed…

Jack and Toby followed as the 2nd pair and although jack was bowled in the 1st over they both settled down, protected their wickets and ran when given the opportunity by some tight fielding at the end they reached a positive score by the 8th over and Hythe were finally of and running on 203.

New boys Marc and Alex were Hythes 3rd pair and both took to cricket well and both stayed not out for the 4 overs and both came out with positive scores with Marc finding the boundary in their 3rd over.

Hythe score 217 after 12….

Final pair Kieran and Richard knew they needed to pile on the runs to make a game of it and they started well Richard in particular driving straight and through the covers to finish Hythe ‘s top scorer on 8 and Kieran although bowled late on cut to the boundary to achieve almost parirty in the book.

Overall finishing on 232 for 4 was competitive score if the bowlers performed although running between the wickets was noted in the managers book as a future talking point…….

Hythe needed to start well. And although Kieran / then Josh lead the way with tight overs a wicket could not be bought and even missile catcher Josh dropped what he would call a sitter and Hythe had to wait until the 8th over befor the 1st wicket to fall at which time OT’s had amassed 233 already so more wickets were required if Hythe were to stage a fight back.

At the 10th over Alex took the catch to give Hythe hope and cap off a personally great day in the field for him still 233 on the board, still in with a shout and the big guns still to bowl. Only one more wicket was to fall in the last over of the day Josh picking up C.Holmes who had put up a stubborn display with colleague S.Course who showed a great defensive technique for such a young player.

Final score OT’s 243, The difference today positive running between the wickets (it can be worked on), 12 extra runs given in wides( it can be worked on) and My wife taking my son to London in the cricket season ( We’ve already had words) .

But all in all its the only the 1st game and we will get better as the season progresses.
