Hythe On Form As Tongs Hits Ton
The Hythe Senior sides made it 4 out of 4 this weekend with a comprehensive 9 wicket win over tour visitors Ansley. Ansley Sports were on a two day weekend tour and the previous day had beaten a young O.T's & Romsey side in their opening fixture.
Hythe again fielding a a combination of senior and junior players made quick in-roads into the Ansley batting as Darren Miller & Lee Powell both struck with the visitors on 18, but a 70 partnership in just 9 overs between J.Musson and R.Franks seemed to swing the game towards Ansley and although Musson retired injured the scoring rate was maintained with Franks looking very strong. Hythe opted for some 1st XI intervention as skipper Richie Froggett and Nardus Grobler broke through the visitors middle order with Grobler removing Franks for a fine 72 and B. Morgan 17, and Froggett dismissing the returning Musson 46 and then striking twice more to turn the game Hythe's way at 157-7.
Peter Stevens Jnr then put in an excellent spell taking 2-6 from 5 overs and Russell Moore finished off the Ansley innings at 187. Hythe opened with Sean Tongs & Mike Bowman and despite a couple of early close calls against the bowling of B.Morgan soon settled into a solid partnership that looked like taking the game away from Ansley with Bowman in particular looking in great form, but with the score on 88 an error of judgement from Tongs led to Bowman being run out for a fine 49. Matt Howe came to the wicket and after a scratchy start against the spin of Mosson & Phillips jnr found his feet and assisted Tongs in taking complete control of the game. Sean brought up his fifth century for the club in fine style finishing on 107* and Matt Howe 20* as the home side raced to victory by 9 wickets and with 9 overs to spare.
The game was played in a very good spirit and we thank Ansley Sports for the game on a very chilli afternoon.
