MEMORABLE MATCH
' TRIBUTE TO PHIL PICK'
9th August 1980
Hythe 2nd XI Vs Old Tauntonains
Life in the Southern League Second Team League was never easy for the Hythe Second XI and during their time in the competition they often found themselves rooted to the bottom of the league. Yet in 1980 Phil Pick had put together a half decent side mixed with experienced players such as himself, Mike Pick, Paul Wastell and David Hoy and then their was some top younger players coming through such as Paul Whitlock and Roy Biles.
Indeed on their day a bowling attack of the two Picks, Paul Whitlock and Bill Palmer was a challenge for most sides.
The game I have chosen this time was a encounter aginst Old Tauntonians who in previous seasons had given the Hythe side a real roasting. Fresh from two wins against South Wilts and Trojans, Phil Picks side was confident going into the game.
Phil won the toss and chose to field first and after the opening attack of Paul Whitlock and Bill Palmer had reduced the visitors to 32 for 0 off 11 overs the Dad and Son attack of the Picks then went to work with great effect. A feat that was most commom in the back seventies.
