HYTHE FIRST XI Vs LIPHOOK & RIPSLEY II

26th August

Hythe Winning Run Comes To An End

With the prospect of promotion gone perhaps Hythe were not quite as up forit as they could have been, but probably should have beaten a Liphook side who's league position did them no justice, but whose bowling was hardly very frightening.

Toss Won by : Hythe

Hythe bowling first as per usual these days were up against a couple of very useful openers in G.Tyler & S.Appan and were delighted when Froggett bowled Appan for 15, however Hythe's joy was short-lived as Tyler and S.Susantha but on 93 for the second wicket. Keith Alderman in his debut spell for the firsts bowled quite tidily but it took a typical dismissal by golden-arm Simon Wright to dismiss Tyler for 48.

Liphook pushed on though and it took a very fine caught & bowled dismissal of Susantha by Paul Whitlock to check the scoring rate and when Whitlock then removed J.Brighton 18, caught well by Robbie James, Hythe were back in the game at 145-4, with Whits keeping in now tight at one end Hythe were putting pressure on and Nardus Grobler having a rare indifferent day with the ball then struck twice in an over to reduce the home side to 169-6.

Liphook continued to attack and Hythe then turned to their fielders to help out with great run outs by Luke Mills and Grobler. Wright was then called back to bowl out with Froggett and both picked up a wicket each as Liphook were finally dismissed for 209.

A good fight back by Hythe and the 4th game in a row they had picked up max bowling points and without Ben Kendrick, but the old habit of to many extras were hurt Hythe by the end of the game.

Hythe would need 203 from 42 overs following a 15 min stoppage in the first innings and the James boys yet again gave Hythe the start they wanted as they put on 58 from 15 overs before Kev fell for 23, Simon Dixon joined Rob but unfortunately Rob got a grubber after a very fine 34 and despite some lusty blows from the skipper Dixon in a hard hitting 43 the middle order evaporated as Wrighty, Guymer and Grobler only managed 7 runs between them.

Whits joined Dixon in a last ditch effort to put Hythe back in the game at 113-5 but within a couple of over Dixon was out and shortly afterwards when Froggett became Elliot's 5th victim the game was effectively up. Whitlock 12 no with first Alderman 12 and the Mills kept things going though with Mills impressing with his best first team innings of 17 no.

Hythe ended on 170-8, 33 short of victory but how much did those 47 extras cost us??

Still a marvellous season skippered well by Simon Dixon and with some refinements in one or two areas they should push hard again next season for promotion.
