His conversion hit the post but he was on target with a penalty.
Then winger Nick Charlton powered over in the corner after Chris Atkins had the ball taken off him as he ran a kick back at the opposition.
It looked like landslide in Lakeland for a West side hastily reshuffled after Liam Bailey’s car broke down on the A66.
To their credit the pack began to get on top in the set-pieces and fought their way back into the game with the catch and drive proving the best weapon.
Hooker Aidan Jackson-Smith got his side’s first try on 15 minutes after being driven over with Waites’s kick just wide.
Referee Martin Maughan was a stickler for penalising any remotely high tackle and again we kicked to the corner after the home side were penalised.
This time skipper Ryan Painter was the beneficiary – the pack driving over with Waites on target courtesy of the ball bouncing off the cross bar to reduce the arrears to just three points
The high tackle then earned Kendal three points, and they stretched the lead five minutes before the break when second row Greg Wrathall burst through two tackles to go in under the posts.
Our response was to march back up to our lucky corner.
Prop Adam Coates was felled by another high tackle and it was John Bunter (pictured) who finished off the resulting kick to the corner.
Waites’ conversion took the score at the break to 25-19 and his side began the second half in the home half.
The coach was unfortunate to knock on as he was looking to take advantage of acres of space on the right, and then Mr Maughan finally lost patience with the high tackle count.
Kendal inside centre Danny Barker was sin-binned and Waites promptly took advantage by bursting through the middle.
He sent winger Lewis Scott racing towards the corner but he was tackled into touch just short.
We kept up the pressure but failed to add to the score. Instead Kendal added a penalty from Mark Carruthers to their total on a rare second half visit to the West half.
They then lost second row Chris Evans for illegally bringing a maul down but almost immediately we lost Jake Linighan for another high tackle.
With our main lineout jumper off the field Kendal took advantage with a catch and drive try of their own - courtesy of Glen Wrathall - to take the game out of the visitor’s reach with five minutes to go.
We did go all out for a fourth bonus point try but there was to be no consolation with the final catch and drive penalised by Mr Maughan.
