Acklam 10 West 33

Acklam 10 West 33 Graeme Southern's half-time "pep talk" was not for the fainthearted but it the trick for a West side which was made to work all the way for the five points to stay in touch with Northern and City ...

It was a game of four quarters for West. We started off well - going into a 10-0 lead - before indiscipline and a series of penalties allowed Acklam back into the game.

It was also a much changed side to the one selected on Thursday evening. Max Tennant had an excellent debut on the right wing in place of the injured Adam Peacock, the 18 year old doing everything asked of him and a bit more.

Top scorer Will Hilditch was carrying a knock so dropped down to the bench with Gavin Painter starting in the centre and managing to score in the very last minute. In the pack Chris Atkins had to cry off so Connor McLurg went into the second row with Alex Barker on the bench.
Despite the upheaval we did make a comfortable start. Rob Thorn sent Gavin Painter over in the early stages only for the pass to be judged forward, but then Painter, back after his long lay-off, timed his pass to send Peter Youll in after ten minutes.
Our lineout was to be a feature of the game all afternoon with Jake Linighan stealing an Acklam throw to set up the next try – Ryan Painter and Adam Brown combining to send Adam Coates in at the corner. Both conversions had been narrowly wide.
Acklam didn’t reach the West 22 until the 20 minute mark, but that was the start of things going awry.
Referee Mark White awarded a succession of penalties again us and sin-binned Brown after 32 minutes for failing to roll away.
By this time home scrum half Danny Ashton had reduced the arrears to just three points with a quick dart over from five metres.
Acklam did level the scores after 50 minutes when Connor McClurg was penalised for not releasing in front of the posts.
And they could have taken the lead five minutes later with another penalty, but this time fly-half Marcus Sudron’s kick was screwed wide.
Stu Waites had better luck with his penalty to put his side back into a narrow lead, and that margin was increased to six points with a penalty for offside.
With ten minutes left on the clock the game was still not won but it was West who rose to the challenge.
A superb crossfield kick from Waites found Rob Thorn charging up the wing. He managed to get a hand to the ball but, as he was seemingly going to gather, he was tackled off the ball by Acklam winger Tom Hughes.
Mr White looked to be about to award a penalty and a yellow card,  but surprised the West contingent in giving the home side a scrum.
However, Thorn was not to be thwarted. Acklam were penalised for a forward pass as they got the ball away from the scrum, and from our put in Ryan Painter went on the blindside to send Thorn in at the corner to give us an  11 point breathing space.
That was the cue for some all out attacking with West forcing a series of line-outs in the corner, which saw second row Paddy O’Brien yellow carded for persisent infringement.
We made the advantage count with Andy Turner barrelling over for the bonus point try with Waites converting.
There was time for one final effort with replacement front row Jonny Hunter putting in a big hit in midfield. Gavin Painter was the first to the spilled ball and he made it to the corner with some ease.
The 33-10 scoreline was harsh on the home side, and we know we will have to step up our game for the visit of second placed Durham City next week.
