Percy Park 29 West 12

Percy Park 29 West 12 We're back in the relegation zone after poor passing and inability to go through any phases ended our hopes of starting the New Year with a first away win of the season ...

Both sides showed why they are the bottom of the league in a game strewn with mistakes. However, it was the home side who made the most of their opportunities.
We started the second half 24-12 down and went on to enjoy the lion’s share of possession and territory - unfortunately, we rarely looked like scoring.
It had started so much better with the in form Will Hilditch intercepting (pictured) as Park ran the ball in their own 22 with Zac Southern accepting the easy conversion.
Against a side short of wins and confidence that could have been the springboard for us to break their away duck.
It wasn’t to be as Park mounted pressure in our 22. Peter Youll was unfortunate in giving way a penalty at the breakdown, when the ball appeared to be out of the ruck, and the home side took advantage with back row Jake Smith going over in the corner.
Michael Grove missed the conversion, but he made no mistake after 20 minutes to give his side the lead. We had defended a spell of pressure well only to run out of numbers allowing powerful centre Phil Morse to go over.
With skipper Ryan Painter leading from the front, we continued to tackle well and seized the opportunity to draw level after Park were penalized on the halfway.
Southern kicked for the corner with Jake Linighan rising to take the line out ball. Against bigger opponents the pack mauled its way towards the line where Painter was sharp on the short side to go in the corner. Southern’s conversion was just wide and with the score level it was still looking like anybody’s game. However, it was the home side who used their extra power to effectively seal the game before half time.

First they demolished a West scrum to take possession with fly half Grove going over to set up an easy conversion for himself.
Then yet another wayward pass as wet attacked outside the Park 22 allowed the home backs to seize on the ball and set off on a break down the right.
West’s man of the match Rob Thorn, making his first start of the season, hauled down winger Toby Davison only for the loose ball to bounce kindly for Park’s supporting players. They moved it smartly out to the left where Leo Caulfield had an easy run in.
That earned Park a try bonus point and a 12 point half time lead.
With the line-out working efficiently we were still in the game, and spent a good part of the next forty minutes in the home half. Unfortunately, without playmaker Gavin Painter - missing with a hamstring injury - we failed to make any clear-cut chances.
Thorn provided the main attacking threat but he couldn’t break through the defensive line, and it was almost inevitable that Park would score when they eventually made it back to the West 22.
With just two minutes left they managed the only score of the half. Winger Davison tried to take a quick line-out only for referee Graham Crosier to insist on a retake. Park took the line-out ball forcing their way towards the line with big second row Josh Hedley claiming the score.
With most of the other teams at the bottom losing, West are still in with a fighting chance of getting out of trouble. However, we face league leaders Morpeth at home next week before travelling to Penrith.

Some work needs to be put in.
