Guisborough 15 West 29

By Dave Picken - September 25 2016
Guisborough 15 West 29 Another disjointed performance but nevertheless a five try win which keeps us on top of the league.

Our domination of the set piece paved  the way and got us off to a great start before errors allowed the home side back into it.

We began by forcing our way up the hill towards the clubhouse where persistent pressure saw gaps open up out wide. Ryan Painter whipped the ball out right where we had a two man overlap with Paul Moss sending Peter Youll away to outpace the cover to give his side an early five point lead.

However, we failed to take control at the restart and Guisborough set up some lively attacks ending with lock Michael McDougal forcing his way over to set up an easy conversion for Christian Pollock.

The home fly half went on to become the liveliest player on show, and he promptly took full advantage of a West mistake on the half way to intercept and gallop half the length of the field.

He blotted his copybook by failing with the easy conversion attempt, and that was the spur for the West forwards to take the play back into the home half where their scrummaging was forcing the big home pack backwards at a rate of knots.

The result was a try for Gavin Painter. Sustained pressure on the home line produced options on either side, and it was a quick pass to the onrushing Painter which saw him race in at the corner to reduce the home lead to two points.

Our third try quickly followed and this time it was Painter the provider. His deft through kick outfoxed the home defence and, as it headed for the touchline, it was chased down by three West players. Winger Liam Checksfield was first to the ball and he collected superbly at speed to go over.

Gav was narrowly wide with his conversion, but we did go into the break with a three point lead and the prospect of playing down hill in the second half.

We made the most of that advantage with a series of breaks which had Guisborough defending desperately. However, the dam was breached when Michael Hogan timed a short run to perfection to crash over and give his side a bonus point with Painter adding the extras.

We had our tails up. However, it was Guisborough who got the next score when a rare incursion in the visiting 22 saw them awarded a penalty at the breakdown.

And then they almost got themselves back on level terms with another interception on the left. The ball was fed to winger Mark Ferguson who produced a lightning bolt of speed which took him over the line only for Checksfield's last ditch tackle to knock the ball from his hands.

Our response was to go straight back down to the bottom corner where the home side had two forwards sin-binned in quick succession.  Prop Pete Hopkins was the first to go for deliberate offside followed by John Hewson for hands on the floor.

As a result the game went to uncontested scrums with West battering the home line once again.

The hard working Alex Barker went over, only to be judged to have been held up, but there was no stopping Sam Miller. He spotted a gap in the defensive line to power his way over from five metres with Painter completing the scoring.

Next up  are Bradford and Bingley at Brinkburn. The Bees have brought in a number of South Africans, following their promotion from Yorkshire One, and they may provide our sternest test yet.

Don't think club members will object to "disjointed performances" if we keep winning with bonus points!

Well done lads and keep it up.
