Dinnington 12 West 3

By Dave Picken - December 13 2015
Dinnington 12 West 3 This game hinged on a mad two minutes immediately before the break when we lost two to the bin and conceded a penalty try ..

Trailing 5-3 in the mud,  we were forced to defend our line ten metres out with referee Colin Tovey yellow carding Sam Miller for lying across the ball.

Dinnington opted for a scrum instead of a kick, but were driven back by the West pack with a home prop popping up - not for the first time.  However, MrTover ruled that  Dan Boatman had been driving through illegally, and he too got his marching orders.

Worse was to come as Dinnington naturally opted for another scrum and this time Mr Tovey blew his whistle and pointed to the posts for a penalty try. The simple conversion was followed by the whistle for half time leaving a  frustrated  West trailing by more than one score.

We'd gone behind on nine minutes when a simple catch and drive was poorly defended with home hooker Matthew Starr the man to touch down.

Gavin Painter reduced the arrears with a well judged penalty from outside the 22, but that was the end of our scoring.

With the rain falling, and the wind blowing almost straight across the hill top pitch, the game was littered with mistakes  with the greasy ball lost time  and time again in contact.

There were four enforced changes to the pack, which had the effect of producing the lightest eight of the season so far, and Dinnington made use of their advantage in the set piece.

However, both Tom Shaw and John Bunter can be proud of their tireless contribution to the cause. Heroically we managed to keep the hosts out at the start of the second half despite being down to 13 men.

We then finished the game desperately looking for a bonus point with replacement Rob Thorn's strong intelligent running creating some space in midfield and Stu Waites coming into the line to break through. First he raced up the left, quickly followed by a fine break up the right wing which brought the final whistle when he was tackled inside the home 22.

Those were the only incidents that went into the soggy notebook after the break as both sides cancelled each out in a scoreless forty minutes.

Well done to the lads who stepped in and went all that way on a dreadful day to play for their club.

I think they should all be the first names on the team sheet come Boxing Day,

You make a good point but some players missed the game through injury.
I won't repeat my views on players being absent for other reasons during the season
