Huddersfield YMCA 21 West 15

Huddersfield YMCA 21 West 15 After a disastrous start to the game we almost did enough to come away with a victory...

We were camped on the home line for the last ten minutes of the game and a converted try would have given us victory, but a combination of solid defence and wrong decision making let the second placed side off the hook.

It hadn’t begun that way with Huddersfield straight out of the blocks looking to avenge a 30-19 defeat at Brinkburn back in November. We were second best in every phase in the opening minutes and it was no surprise when we went behind to two quickfire tries.

On 13 minutes home centre Adam Ryder was allowed to run through a number of missed tackles to go in under the posts to set up Gavin Stead for an easy conversion.

Then almost from the restart the lively Huddersfield backs spun the ball out and winger Lloyd Bentley was able to run home unopposed. Stead this time adding a tricky conversion from the corner.

We were playing into a strong wind, frequent heavy showers and, at one time, heavy snow. But the two tries sparked a response, and we began to win the set piece and work our way back into the game with Ryan Painter and Alex Barker both prominent.

Stu Waites got the first score for the visitors with a penalty before West closed the half by kicking a penalty into the corner.

Second row Michael Hogan forced his way over the line only to be held up. However, he made no mistake as we took another line-out and drove him over. Waites just failed to convert from the touchline.

The driving rain and hail was so bad that both sides took shelter in the dressing rooms for the half time break.

Fortunately, the sun came out as we looked to use the elements in their favour in the second half.  And It took us only two minutes to go in front in somewhat unusual circumstances.

Stu Waites took a penalty from in front of the stand close to the half way line which hit the post. Huddersfield opted to run the rebound, instead of kicking into the gale, only to give away a penalty on their own 22.

Ryan Painter quickly seized the opportunity to tap and go. He beat a host of defenders as he made his way over in the corner with Stu Waites adding a magnificent conversion.

We were in the lead for the first time and looking likely to add to our tally, but it was Huddersfield who clinched the win with their only real attack of the half.

Centre Ed Barber put in a superb diagonal kick which was gratefully accepted by Lloyd Bentley with Stead again sending in a superb conversion.

We plugged away but to no avail, and it was a somewhat relieved home side which took the honours while we had to make do with a losing bonus point.
