Sheffield 8 West 20

By Dave Picken - November 10 2013
Sheffield 8 West 20 Two tries from  Jonny Boatman earned a hard ended victory on what turned out to be a very wet Abbeydale Park ...

At one stage either side of half time Sheffield were down  to just 12 men with three players in the sin-bin, but we could only manage to take three points from that three man advantage.

There were some late changes to our line-up after centre Peter Youll broke an ankle at work,  and with No 8 Sam Miller resting a calf injury ahead of a representative game next weekend.

Seventeen year old Kyle Jamieson came in for his first start on the wing and Andy Turner taking Miller's place in the back row.

Our bright start led to a penalty in the seventh minute for offside and we continued to play the game in the home half until a controversial incident from a clearing kick.

Scott Butcher made a hash of his catch and the ball rolled off the pitch. The home side raced up to take a quick throw with referee David Downham ignoring claims that the ball had bounced back from a fence with a supporter returning the ball. If that was the case a proper line-out should have been formed, but after the game Mr Downham said that like the West defence he had been looking elsewhere.

With no whistle Sheffield raced for the West line, and although winger Ali Womack was tackled short of the line there were enough players in support for full back Jimmy Pearson to go over.

The visitors were briefly knocked back on their heels with Pearson adding a penalty to give his side an unlikely 8-3 lead.

But that was to be the end of their scoring. West set up a series of attacks in the home 22 opting for line-outs instead of penalty kicks at goal - eventually Sheffield second row Richard Joel was yellow carded for repeated infringement at the breakdown.

We took our chance and Jon Boatman was the man to emerge with the ball as the visiting pack drove their hosts back over their own line. Waites converted to give his side a two point lead.

Things got worse for Sheffield when minutes later by centre Simon Tillyer for a crude body check on Stu Waites as he chased his own chip kick. Waites needed some considerable attention before he could resume with Tillyer lucky not to have received a stricter penalty. He did, however, make a point on his return of shaking Waites' hand and offering his apologies.

Right on half time West attacked up the right wing and as Sheffield frantically tried to stop the attack Ali Womack became the third player in the bin for coming in at the side.

Form the restart we used their numerical supremacy to set up a series of attacks which saw Andrew Cheslin tackled by centre Tom King with the use of his arms . This time Mr Downham decided that his yellow card should stay in his pocket, but Waites made no mistake with his penalty attempt.

With just a five point margin we were always in danger of a sucker punch especially when the heavens opened with twenty minutes left.

Sheffield had their best chance when right winger James Twomey kicked ahead after breaking clear on the half way line, but fortunately for the visitors  the ball went dead before he could touch down.

We continued to look for the score which would have made the game safe with Stu Waites sending a drop goal attempt wide before Boatman got his second try just two minutes from the end.

Once again concerted pressure from the West pack, with replecament hooker Andy Dixon taking three against the head, saw the flanker finish off driving maul with Waites converting from close to the touchline.

Sounds like a hard earned win. Nothing conceded in last quarter is pleasing however!!!

Must admit it got a bit tense following the match update until that last score.
Denny is correct there are some big games coming up in the next few weeks so hopefully we will use the week off to get ourselves prepared.
I wish a speedy recovery to Peter Youll who has been playing very well this season.
