Park were fielding all of their summer recruits from the likes of Pertemps Bees, Sale, Waterloo and Fylde and have made no secret of their promotion ambitions this term.
We were missing several key players, through injury or unavailability, including Jamie Connolly who had to pull out on the morning of the game aftera ciling collapsed at his home. Mossy came in at centre with Stu Waites drafted onto the bench.
Not surprisingly the home side started full of confidence. They went into the lead with a Dave Hall penalty on ten minutes followed by a try from pacy centre Freeman Payne on his first game after signing from Waterloo.
Anth Carr was held up on the line on 20 minutes, but Park came back and winger Patrick McDonagh went in at the corner after charging down a Darren Thomas clearance.
Mossy got his got his first points with a penalty on the half hour to make it 15-3, before Birkenhead went further ahead when giant prop Martin O'Keefe, another new addition from Waterloo, peeled off from their very strong line-out forcing his way over under the posts.
But we dug deep and forced our way back into the game with player coach Tim Sawyer leading from the front. However we were limited to two Moss penalties to make it 22-9 at the break.
We had the strong wind in our faces in the second half and started having to defend in our own 22. Fly half Tony Handley completing the home sides scoring with a drop goal on 56 minutes.
Moss pegged the score back to 25-12 with a penalty on the hour and then scored the try of the afternoon. He finished off a great break from Andrew Cheslin as the [pair raced up the left wing interchanging passes before Moss dived in at the corner.
That was the end of the scoring but the game finished with West desperate for score to give them at least a bonus point. Flanker Dan Palmer was yellow carded on 72 minutes for illegally ending one scoring chance, and then both Dave Garside and Chris Stewart -on as replacements from Henry Tones and Paul Rudd - both came agonisingly close to going over.
Despite ten minutes of injury time we failed to get the points which would have given us that deserved bonus.
