Nice and refreshed from an overnight stay in Burton-upon-Trent, we made a lively start in front of a big crowd at Lichfield Street.

Andrew Cheslin almost dived in for a sixth-minute try as Burton dilly-dallied touching dowen a Paul Moss kick ahead.

For all their bright intentions, West fell behind in the 10th minute when Burton won a penalty on their first visit to the away 22 and Dave Barker stroked over the kick.

Anth Carr's side responded with a strong spell of pressure and after they took play to the Burton line, the two Pauls, Williamson and Moss handled to give Tom Dixon an easy run-in. His try was converted with a majestic kick from wide on the right by Moss, who was narrowly off-target with two penalties.

The lead should have been doubled in the last minute of the half when Iain Robinson had a chance to become the second lock on the scoresheet but he fell into touch just five metres short.

But a 7-3 lead represented a good 40 minutes of work by West, who had looked lively and inventive in attack only to come up against a determined home team.

Burton, the leaders of Midlands Two West, narrowed the away lead to a point when Archer landed a penalty from wide on the left on 50 minutes.

Moss replied with a lovely kick from wide on the left on the hour and West had restored their four-point advantage.

Burton lacked the skilful backplay of their visitors, but their pack was a strong unit and they set up camp in the West 22 for the last 10 minutes of normal time.

They had several excellent attacking positions but West were in no mood to buckle and when Burton were penalised three minutes into added time, Moss was able to kick his side into home territory.

Iain Robinson won the line-out and Tim Sawyer's side drove towards the Burton line. They looked set to close the tie out comfortably but conceded a couple of penalties and Burton had one last throw of the dice. They launched a counter-attack and for one moment it looked threatening but when the ball went down 30 metres out, the referee called a halt nine minutes into injury time.

It was a magnificent performance in an enthralling and well-fought contest, with the beaten Burton players, spectators and officials very gracious in defeat.
