Hat-trick West 36 Beverley 17
By El Pedro - November 29 2008
An Iain Dixon hat-trick helped West continue their good home form in the league, making it five wins from six games at Brinkburn this season. >
West took their chances well, not really dominating the game territorially but scoring when the chances came where Beverley failed to convert a long period of pressure in the first half into points.

Baby arrivals in the Carr and Sawyer families forced some rearrangements to the West front row with promotions from the bench for Jon Norris and Andrew Dixon, Adam Coates and Scott Butcher joining Darren Thomas as substitutes.

It was Iain Dixon who opened the scoring with a good solo effort with 7 minutes played. His initial break was followed by a neat chip through to beat the last man, the full-back collecting the ball to score to the right of the posts although Moss couldn't add the simple conversion. Mike Kilgannon failed with a long range penalty attempt to cut the deficit 5 minutes later but was successful with another shot with just over 20 minutes gone.

Beverley went on to have the lions share of possession and territory in the first period, West guilty of some poor kicking at times, but the hosts defence was solid and the visitors didn't make the most of some good try scoring opportunities.

Moss missed a simple penalty with 40 minutes on the clock but Iain Dixon added his second score in first half injury time. In a rare foray into the opposition 22 West had an overlap on the left and as the ball came out to Dixon he slipped one tackle and raced in for the try. Once again Moss missed a straightforward conversion and what could have so easily been a 17-3 half-time lead was only 10-3 with no attempts at goal successful.

Ten minutes into the second half Moss turned provider for a try finished by Colin Cheslin. The fly-half made an excellent break inside his own half and fed Gareth Kerr who raced away into the Beverley half. He timed his pass perfectly to Cheslin who held of his man to finish well. Moss slotted the conversion for a 17-3 lead.

Davy Tighe scrambled over for a try on the hour and Iain Dixon completed his hat-trick 5 minutes later again chipping through and collecting the loose ball superbly with one hand to score and leave Moss an easy conversion which he made no mistake with.

Beverley began their fightback in the last 10 minutes first scoring a try through Jamie Gill, converted by Ian Archibald and with 5 minutes to play Kilgannon dove over after a quick tap penalty 5 metres out. Archibald cut the lead to 12 points with the conversion and after looking well clear a few nerves seemed to appear in the West camp. Thankfully those nerves didn't last too long as after the restart Beverley failed to clear and as the ball went loose inside the 22, replacement prop Adam Coates pounced to score under the posts and leave Moss to seal the win with the conversion.

West will be happy with their overall performance, scoring 6 tries and for the most part showing resolute defence. Beverley looked like a side sure to improve on their current lowly league position but if West can continue their good run of form at home they should be sure of not joining the battle at the foot of the table.

Some great play and well finished tries. A fair amount of aimless kicking by both side in the first half, but you can't argue with 6 tries. bring on hull

Hull have some firepower, and East yorkshire has not always been a happy hunting ground for you!

Mike Young was impressive on TV last night wasn't he?

Mikey was tremendous. Absolutely delighted for the lad.

Thought we did very well on saturday considering the personnel who are missing at the moment. Great credit to all of the coaches for being able to slot players in at short notice.

Young Butcher looks like he may be another good un.

I'll just point out that when I say "bring on hull" that does not mean "we will beat hull easily".

it will be a very difficult game - they are the best team in the league at the moment and we haven't done well away from home. But lets have a crack at them. bring them on!

Having played against Stockport, I reckon West will carry greater threat.

Presumably Sawyer and Carr will be available for Hull.

What news of Myers, Connolly, Morison and Thorn ?

Wont know until training tonight but my understanding is

Myers -Now unlikely to play until the New Year
Boatman - making massive strides but a long way off playing
Tighe - abroad on business and sadly due another ankle op
Connolly - The doc did an incredible stitching job on his eye but unlikely to be available for a week or two
Morrison - I think he is available again
Thorn - haven't a clue

That should keep you going

Good luck this saturday boys at "New Tongonians" and i wish you well.
But i feel you could be in for a drubbing!
Last week the reports back i received were Beverley were awful with West not being much better.
As Wonderfish has already stated the fire power out wide for Hull can be quite awesome, not only Tevita but a very very good Tongan winger strong and fast and scoring for fun at the moment.

On the possitive side, the weather is awful and a great leveller, keep it tight, slow there ball down, minimise your mistakes and play off there's,the longer the game go's on the more frustrated they will become, and they are not known for there patience. You could nick it with penalties. Good luck.
