Superb try Durham City 12 West 37
By Dave Picken - November 24 2008
This was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests - despite a host of changes and the loss of Gareth Kerr to a leg injury in the first five minutes. All of the players who came in put down a marker for a first team spot with serious selection headaches on the cards for the coaches. >

One of the coaches actually recorded the last try of the day. Tim Sawyer, on as a replacement in the last ten minutes, positively galloped through a gap in the defensive ranks to touch down.

Paul Moss had started the scoring on five minutes when he slotted a drop goal from just outside the 22 with his right foot. Normally that's his standing foot.

We went further ahead on the quarter hour when Paul Rudd made a trademark break down the centre before feeding Iain Dixon who, for once, was caught just short of the line. The ball was recycled and, when it went right, that man Moss was there to power over the line to set himself up for an easy conversion.

The inevitable next score came on 23 minutes when Andy Cheslin beat his man on the left finding Iain Dixon once again in support. This time there was no catching him - but Moss missed the easy conversion.

It stayed that way until the break. With City short of ball and attacking ideas, both sides seemed to accept a West victory with little to warm the crowd. That was until Darren Thomas came on for Paul Williamson who had been having a substantial impact himself.

It is sometime since Dash has played scrum half but he immediately made his mark, taking a quick tap penalty on the 22, and scorching passed a startled home defence to make it 20-0.

Iain Dixon was the next West player to show silky running skills. Sadly his pass then went straight to home centre Chris Metcalfe who raced in under the posts to make it 20-7.

It wasn’t long before West increased their lead. This time it was a well deserved try for prop Chris Stewart who forced his way over after a great backs move, including Paul Rudd, set up a maul on the home line

Chris almost repeated the feat seconds later but, with Coates on for Norris and Sawyer for Iain Robinson, the pressure was kept up. Moss got his second try of the afternoon again taking the ball some 20 metres out and jinking his way through to set up another conversion.

Saywer's try came with two minutes on the clock but City kept plugging away. After a kick to the corner they set up Richard Knowles to force his way over right on the whistle.

City: Van loo, Harding, Metcalfe, Knowles, Lowes, Stevenson, Freeman, Oates, Nichols, Archbold, Smithjson, Whitfield, Roberts, Leyson, Johnson. Reps: Hat, Parkinson, McCreedy.

West I Dixon C Cheslin Kerr [Hodsgon 4] Howe A Cheslin Moss Williamson [Thomas 60] Stewart A Dixon Norris [Coates 65] I Robinson [Sawyer 65] T Dixon Rudd D Boatman Vinnicombe [c] Reps Coates Sawyer Thomas Hodgson

Ignoring the idiot it is good to see Moss scoring a couple of tries. Sounds like an excellent all round performance. Well done lads.
