Official West Hartlepool RFC
Top Try Scorer Birkenhead Park 17 West 14
By Dave Picken - November 16 2008
We almost got the points despite losing three backs to injury. Rob Thorn injured his shoulder in the very first minute then we went on to lose his replacement Greg Edwards and finally Jamie Connolly. >
In the last quarter of the game we had Dan Boatman and Dominic Morrison on the wings with Tim Sawyer and Iain Robinson taking their places in the back row.
But, despite it all, we were seconds from earning a point against one of the top sides in the division.
We had come back from an 11-0 half time score to take the lead. Fly half Tony Hanley putting the home side ahead, against the run of play, with a penalty on ten minutes. He scored another on 29 minutes just one minute after Thorn had to finally succumb to his injury and leave the pitch.
Replacement Greg Edwards promptly injured his elbow and had to go on the wing as West reshuffled again.
To add to the visitors woes Morrison was yellow carded at a ruck. Birkenhead took advantage with centre Gavin Scott breaking through to score on 36 minutes.
Paul Moss missed a penalty from 30 metres on the stroke of half time, but we didn’t have to wait long in the second half for the score our play deserved.
Jamie Connolly was the man to run a fine line from 20 metres after another flowing backs move outstripped the home defence. Moss converted to make it 11-7.
Edwards also had to give in and leave the field with prop Jon Norris coming on as West reshuffled right through the team. It didn’t stop us taking the lead.
This time we turned defence into attack closing down a home break on our ten metres line. Gareth Kerr made a great 40 metre break up the left wing before feeding Iain Dixon. He raced in under the posts to set up Moss to give us a deserved14-11 lead.
But Birkenhead drew level on 67 minutes when Hanley stroked over a penalty from 35 metres after foul play a ruck. In the same incident Jamie Connolly received a cute eye and left the pitch for hospital treatment.
It was still end to end stuff but the final score was to the home side. It came two minutes from the end with Iain Robinson sin binned for being offside at a ruck and Hanley scoring the winning penalty.

Sounds like we didn't get the rub of the green in terms of injuries. Keep the effort going lads and we'll soon start to get some away wins.
