Stags 40 Darlington 7
Butcher - 1st try The Stags entertained Darlington in this CANDY League fixture, on a dry but very windy Brinkburn pitch. With the wind blowing from the south: straight up the pitch. The conditions were not ideal for the type of running rugby the Stags like to play; it was however the same for both teams.
Playing with the wind behind them in the first half the Stags struggled to apply any sort of control on the game. It was immediately evident that the wind would have a major impact upon both teams ability to move the ball around. With countless forward passes and the ball rolling around on the ground in the wind, which was a couple of times interpreted as a knock on by the referee. The game began with the early pressure being applied by Darlington aided by some Stags indiscipline as they conceded seven a penalty in the first ten minutes. However it was the Stags who were first on the scoreboard on the 15 minute mark as Darlington concede a penalty in the centre of the field on their own: twenty two metre line as their full back held on to the ball on the floor, which was kicked by Wallis (3-0).

He followed this up with another kick awarded for the same reason on the 15th minute mark (6-0).

It took the Stags until the 34th minute mark to finally move good quick ball out to Butcher on the left wing who rounded his opposite number from twenty metres out to score the games first try, unconverted (11-0).

Just as the half drew to a close, after a couple of storming runs and some good rucking Thorn stepped through two men from fifteen metres out to score in the right hand corner, unconverted (16-0).

At the start of the second half Darlington attempted to apply pressure on the Stags by placing long kicks down field. This tactic however played right into the Stags hands as they are at the best when running the ball which then commenced to do at every opportunity. Darlington managed to keep the Stags at bay until the 52nd minute when Cavey was set free down the right wing to score converted by Wallis (23-0).

The Stags now began to dominate the game and 3 minutes later after some very good handling in the backs after a quick ruck, Edwards burst through the defence to score down the right wing unconverted (28-0).

The next score on the 64th minute mark came as a result of a quick ruck on the far left of the field where the ball was recycled quickly and moved swiftly by Williamson and Butcher for Greenwell to crash over from five metres out, unconverted (33-0).

Two minutes later Thorn was released down the right wing by Williamson to score again after a quick ruck, converted by Wallis (40- 0).

Darlington however did not give up and on the 35th minute mark after a hopeful kick ahead by their stand off, an unusual mistake in the stags defence, allowed the number 12 to score under the posts, converted (40-7). The game was ended by the referee two minutes later as one of the Darlington players was tackled by the stags scrum half where he fell awkwardly and appeared to damage his shoulder one hopes that this was not as bad as it looked at the time.
