Stags 85 Sunderland 0
First try The Stags management were very keen that the players did not to take this CaNDY game lightly after their rather indifferent performances over the last few weeks. Sunderland were the team that knocked them out of the second team cup at the semi final stage last year.
The match was played in particularly good conditions; whilst not as stiflingly hot as last week at Durham it was still good warm ideal weather for running rugby. Which referee John Pearson encouraged the players to do at every opportunity.

From the kick off the Stags made their intentions clear and moved the ball wide at every opportunity and on the 4 minute mark full back Thomas came into the line at pace and cut through the Sunderland defence from some twenty metres out to score under the posts converted by Wallis [7-0].

The Sunderland pack then raised their game and took the game to the Stags and both sides had opportunities to score but failed to keep control of the ball at the last minute with the line open. It was not until the 34th minute that Edwards broke through the Sunderland defence and put right winger Cole away to score with a well timed pass, converted by Wallis [14-0].

From the restart the Stags took the ball straight back at the opposition and after some deft handling by forwards (front row) and backs prop Stewart cut through the defensive line from twenty metres out to score an excellent try converted by Wallis [21-0].

Again from the restart the ball was secured and centre Edwards burst through the defence to score with the last play of the half converted by Wallis [28-0].

Three minutes into the second half winger Cole was set free to round his man and score in the right hand corner, unconverted [33-0].

5 minutes later flanker Baggs with some superb support play was on hand to receive an inside pass to score from 10 metres out converted by Wallis [40-0].

From this point on the game was all but finished as a thoroughly demoralised Sunderland team tried to keep the now rampant Stags team at bay but were completely overran with further tries from: Henderson; 2, Cole; 3 and Butcher; 2.

Whilst the squad can be very happy with this result they will have much sterner test to come in the weeks ahead.
