Carlisle 20 Stags 10
Try Scorer Armstrong A very young Stag’s side, with an average age of twenty travelled to Carlisle on Saturday with high expectations of being able to emulate last years good performance in the CaNDY league. However Carlisle big pack had other ideas and were very keen to avenge last year’s home defeat by the Stags.
The match kicked of in fine autumn sunshine on a soft well grassed pitch. For the first quarter of the game the Stags could not get their hands on the ball and it was no surprise when after some good interplay on the 13 minute mark the Carlisle centre broke through and crossed the line for the opening score, unconverted (5-0).

The Stags then began to get into the game and tried to move the ball wide at every opportunity well orchestrated by stand off Gav Robinson with the aim of moving the large opposition pack around the field. This resulted in creating space on the right hand side of the field for Armstrong (a late replacement for A Larkin) after 29 mins of play to break clear some twenty five metres out and to round the Carlisle defence to score unconverted (5-5).

The Stags willingness to move the ball wide at every opportunity was their undoing with the Carlisle left winger capitalising by latching on to a forced pass from the Stags and sprinting over from some twenty metres out six minutes from half time (13-5).

Undaunted the Stags continued to move the ball wide and two mins from half time, after some quick thinking from a tap penalty, they moved the ball across the field and set Armstrong free down the right wing where he rounded his opposite number and then cut inside the covering defence to score unconverted ( 13- 10)

The second half began with the Stags very young pack superbly led by No8 and Captain C. Miller began to move their much larger and more experienced counterparts around the field and win good ball for their obviously quicker backs. They attempted to move the ball wide unfortunately they concede a turnover on the sixty seventh min and were driven back into their own half were they forced into conceding a penalty on the twenty two metre line which was converted (15-10).

The stags kept moving the ball wide at every opportunity ultimately this led to their down fall as they moved the ball wide in an effort to out flank the opposition in what looked like the culmination of a very promising set of moves. The Carlisle number twelve in an attempt to stop what appeared to be a try scoring pass 8 mins from time, dived forward to take a brilliant interception, and as he landed on the floor, flipped the ball up to his supporting winger who ran in a match winning try (20-10).
