Rochdale 12 West 5
Injured
A lacklustre display and injuries to Carr and Vinnicombe means the coaches have plenty to think about as we have just one more warm up game before Middlesbrough arrive for the first league game. However, the Stags beat Rochdale 64-17 and the Bucks drew their first ever game 7-7 with Athletic.

A mix up over referees caused a half hour delay to the start of the first team game - it didn't affect the home side who started like a train. With fly half Steve Collins back at the club, they threw the ball around with enterprise and skill which at least gave us some defensive practice.

West only got into their 22 once in the first half, after a surging run by Jamie Connolly, but managed to keep the score down to 12-0 at the break. The home side's first try came wide on the left, after we missed a couple fo tackles in midfield allowing winger Helliwell to touch down.

The second was an bit more fortunate with Paul Vinnicombe looking to have covered a grubber kick - but the bounce was extremely unkind and centre Ward touched down.

Like last week the forwards were struggling to win ball and the amount of turnovers conceded must be of some concern to the coaches. The ship was steadied in the second half and we did get the only score. Aaron Myers picking up after pressure on the home line and forcing his way through the defence.

Both sets fo half back combinations werer used with Williamson and Wallis starting the game and Tighe and Moss finishing it. Various front row combinations were also tried. Coates coming on for the injured Carr, followed by Robinson. Vinnicombe dropped back in to No 8 to allow Rudd to partner Tom Dixon but, on the day, little gelled. Both Cheslins had enterprising games with Colin coming on for Rob Thorn.

But the worst news was the knee injury to Anth Carr which saw him hobbling off and an ankle injury to Vinnicombe which meant he had to be carried off.

Steve Black's training session is this Tuesday. Hopefully, it will help blow the summer cobwebs away.
