We were without Chocky, who didn't travel because of an impending arrival, and Gavin Painter who was away on English Colleges duty.
Third from bottom Carlisle began the game as though they were the league leaders. They were a side transformed from the outfit which conceded 67 points at Brinkburn earlier this season with fly half Ben Rimene dictating operations.
He slipped through a non existent defence to score under the posts on eight minutes, then on the quarter hour put his side 10-0 ahead with a simple penalty for offside.
French full back Stephen Helies kep up the pressure picking up in his own half to make forty metres through the West defence. He was tackled but the referee judged that the West tackler hadn’t rolled away and Rimene made it 13-0.Andy Cheslin was judged to have been the guilty party and was sin-binned.
West was feeling that they weren’t getting the rub of the green at the breakdown but the yellow card finally forced them into action.
We finally got into the Carlisle 22 and Paul Moss kicked a penalty to the corner and the forwards took the line out to drive over with Paul Rudd touching down. Moss failed with the conversion but two minutes later he was more successful after the same tactic produced a try for Dan Boatman in the opposite corner to make it 13-12.
That was to be Dan's last major contribution after landing heavily when his lifters were taken out at a line-out.
We were only one point behind at the interval, but failed to take the opportunity to start the second period in brighter fashion.
Instead, it was Rimene who slotted another penalty from in front of the post on 42 minutes.
With Jon Boatman sin-binned on 50 minutes Henry Tones had to leave the pitch with a broken hand. We were without all of their starting back row with Anth Carr moving back to allow Jon Norris to come in as prop.
Carlisle took advantage with scrum half Tom Hughes darting through to score under the posts to make it 23-12.
Rob Thorn finally got into the game and started an attack on 72 minutes with Darren Thomas coming into the action He almost made the line but Carl Robinson was following up to touch down between the posts to bring the visitors to within one score.
In the closing minutes play was concentrated in the Carlisle corner with Moss opting to go for line-outs when the home side conceded several penalties - flanker Mark Allan paying the price with a yellow card. But, as much as we tried, the home defence held out.

A very hard lesson has to be learnt from these two defeats , its pretty obvious really , that you cannot give opposition a double figure head start and expect to win games , get rid of the 10 points at aspatria and 13 at carlisle yesterday and west would have won both games , west ar`nt where they are in the league by playing bad rugby , but as league leaders they must put their authority on the game as soon as the whistle is blown , and get back to playing fast flowing running rugby , both aspatria and carlisle did exactly this and it knocked west for six , panic set in and penalties where awarded, the penalty count is killing us , however the lads did come back very strongly in both games which shows the attitude they have , but by then it was too late as we`re well aware , anyway its time to get behind them and show some support , this is as you are all aware the best season for donkeys years , beats being at the other end , but just as nail biting ...

Interesting comments from Mossy's dad and difficult to argue with. Not being at the game it not on me to comment about last Saturday but as a general principle I feel we need quicker ball from the breakdown.

Are you creaking yet? Where do you play City? I would back you to beat them, though away it would be difficult. I reckon you'll lose in East Yorkshire so the City game will be the deciding one for top spot as I can't see you losing to anyone else, but having said that I can't believe City aren't losing more often.
In short I haven't got a clue, but it's still in your hands.

Now mate,
We were cack on Sat although still should have won at the end - wouldn't have been deserved though.
What's the score with your place, has it dried up yet? Are you able to train/play there? Any sign of you getting back in the side?
We play City away but at least we can't play any worse than Sat. Hopefully not? Like you said it's still in our hands and we'd have taken this situation if it had been ofered in September. Things definately tighter at the top and the bottom than they've been for the last few seasons.
See you 1st March (all being dry!).
Cheers mate.

The City vs West game is the 29th March.
Your probably right wonderfish, i'm sure it will be the game that decides the league as it's now out of Driffield's hands.
I'm also sure that it will be a close, hard fought derby game against two local teams that are made up of local players, which is something that Driffield are unable to do!

SCH,
I'd do it; they'd probably have more chance than your first XV!
In answer to Bev Road Runner (you know the Uni rugby team has stopped doing it?)
What's the score with your place, has it dried up yet?
Not yet as far as I know, I shall drive past it today and inform you later. I think the problem ain't so much the lack of a pitch, we have plenty to play on; but no facilities for washing etc. Have you got a spare Portakabin?
Are you able to train/play there?
The training pitch is fine, the first team pitch has been patially covered in water, so unsure whther it will need to be treated before we can play on it.
Any sign of you getting back in the side?
Nope nowhere near the team, do Rovers pay travelling expenses? Sorry I forgot that no money changes hands whatsoever at the Friarage!
Dax
As for the jibe about local players; I suppose that for years we have pointed that barb at other teams and now we can no longer say it as we field 7 Antipodeans each week.

As an Aspatria supporter, just a couple of points to make
1. As far as I can see there isn't a team in the league capable of surviving in North 1. Unless of course you have a lottery winner hidden away or a Sheffield Sugar Daddy.
2. Both Driffield and City still have to come to Bower Park. City on the last day of the season. Hope they still need 2 points as we owe them.
Ps Wish we had a web site.

Cleggy,
Email Dave Picken (or message him on here) and enquire about the services of Sportnetwork. The sites are very easy to put together and run as long as you have 3 or 4 people who can contribute on a regular basis.
Dave - can I have some commission now?
