Official West Hartlepool RFC
Aldwinians 0 West 35
By Dave Picken - November 29 2007
It all came right in the end. Another stuttering performance saw us run in a couple of late tries to produce a winning margin which was probably a little unfair on our hosts. But a win is a win and for the second week in a row we didn't concede any points. The Stags beat Westtoe IIs 36-14. >

It should have been a lot easier. With the wind and rain at our backs we had the benefit of a typical Rob Thorn try after just one minute - the powerful winger setting up an easy conversion for Paul Moss.

But credit to Aldwinians. They showed plenty of spirit for a side without a win and in 7 foot tall second row Dean Williams they had a distinct line-out advantage despite the heroic efforts of young Tom Dixon.

But the West pack outscrummaged the home eight all afternoon and it was only poor decision making which failed to produce anopther score in the first quarter. Our efforts weren't helped by a sin-binning for Jon Boatman on 16 minutes but Paul Moss did put us 10-0 ahead on 21 minutes with a penalty.

The rest of the first half was spent in a dour midfield battle, and there were some concerns that 10-0 would not be enough with the elements in the home side's favour in the second half.

That wasn't to be the case as the West forwards set about their task and had their opoposite numbers huffing and puffing and almost constantly on the back foot.

Paul Moss got us underway with a penalty in front of the posts in the first minute of the second half which saw Andy Ormrod yellow carded.

Neil Howe was having a fine game in the centre, and was clean through after a great break but dropped the ball ten metres out with the line at his mercy. Then a Moss grubber kick almost set up Thorn for a try.

Despite the pressure we had to wait until the 64th minjute to increase the lead with a Moss penalty after an offside, and then two minutes later home winger Andy Rigby was sin-binned for a late tackle on Rob Thorn.

Neil Howe finally got the try his play deserved when he finished a short penalty move on 67 minutes. He was involved again with Jon Boatman four minutes later to set up Paul Moss for a try which he also converted to make it 28-0.

Man of the match Howe was there again a minute later to race clear down the middle and set up an easy conversion to round off the scoring.
