SUNDERLAND YOUNG ACHIEVERS
What a wonderful evening that was, lots of tissues used and lots of proud mams and dads. In the Sport Sophie Farish (Judo) got the award for 11-14, Declan Meakin got the award for 15-19 and the swim team won the sports award and then Laura Fearn sang a solo in front of everyone and won the 11-14 category for performing arts. They all looked so grown up and smart and their behaviour was excellent. We have a great bunch of young people and we should be very proud of them.

SUNDERLAND SPORTS AWARD
More awards!!! These went to Daniel Batey (Ten Pin Bowling) Andrew Larmer(Swimming) Cailin Varley (Swimming) and Bradley Gowland (Swimming) these were presented to them a the puma centre by City of Sunderland Council. Again another occasion for the tissues!

TEN PIN BOWLING
Sunderland hosted its first regional Ten Pin Bowling championship in March. With teams competing from all over the region our Athletes did brilliantly. Most of our Athletes had never played in a tournament before Daniel Batey Caitlin Morris won gold in their Category. Both these bowlers will be bowling in the national games so things look good for the bowling! Another exceptional performance that I would like to mention was James Carr. He managed to play a whole game for the first time which is a tremendous achievement and a score of 94! Well done James.

NATIONAL JUNIOR DSE SWIMMING GALA SHEFFIELD
Three of our swimmers took part in this gala and we had a great time over the weekend including a trip to the cinema and Pizza hut! Laura Fearn swam in 7 events in the S17 category and did best times in them all winning 7 gold medals. Simone Phillipson swam in this gala for the first time as S15 and would have won a silver and 3 bronze had they not had the minus 1 rule. However Simone did an amazing 100m backstroke knocking nearly 20 seconds off her best time. What a star!!and Caitlin Morris took part in the gala as a guest because her classification was through yet and again best times in all events. Great Swimming girls!!!!

ATHLETICS
Ryan Tennent and James Jennings travelled to Widnes to the North West competition before Easter. Ryan came back with a Gold medal in the relay event, a Bronze medal in the Long Jump and 4th place in the 200m run, James Gold medal in the relay, 4th place in the long jump and 5th place in the 200m. This was their first taste of competition Ryan will be competing in the national games in Athletics so we look forward to hearing more from him over the next few months.

NATIONAL DEAF SWIMMING GALA Loughbrough
Laura Fearn took part in the National deaf swimming Gala in March and managed to win 2 Gold medals in the 50m breastroke and 50m backstroke a silver in the 50m freestyle and a silver in the 100m backstroke. Great swimming Laura she also swam in the 100m free and did a fantastic best time knocking 3 seconds off her time.

JUDO
As I type this our judo group are preparing for their weekend of competition in Scotland so watch this space!!!!!


NATIONAL GAMES NEWS
The news from Leister is updated daily on sol2009.com . There is parent news. Athletes news and much more. Its worth a look.

We are doing really well with our fundraising so keep it up everyone. We have about £5000 still to go to cover everything. I know there are lots of things going on with fundraising events and its great how everyone has pulled together and worked so hard to think of ways that we can raise money.

HOTEL
The head coach for each sport will have a copy of the Hotel list for those going to the games could you please check to see if this is correct. It is also important that you ensure that everyone in your family who is going is registered with Leicester. If you are not getting information from them then you are not registered. If this is the case contact me or register online at sol2209.com.

If you have not yet paid your deposit for the hotel room could you do so as soon as possible the cost is £30 . We are expecting that each family will be given a subsistence voucher while they are at the games the amount of this is still being negotiated.

TRAVEL
We have two coaches going to the games Athletes are expected to travel on the coach and we would advise parents to do so as well. Parking is limited in Leicester and there will be free transport to venues on the shuttle bus. So cars shouldn’t be needed. If you are taking you own car, I need to know this as soon as possible.

NURSE
Sunderland NHS Trust is providing us with a peadiatric nurse for the week in order to look after the medical needs of the children. There will be an opportunity to meet the nurse before we go to discuss medication etc.

MEETING
On Friday 29th May at 2pm at Great Lumley Methodist Church there will be an afternoon with Pantastic where the children can have a go at steel pans or take part in sport, crafts or even watch a movie. While parents can look at all the info from leicester including a virtual tour of accommodation. Carers and coaches will be available for you to talk to and any information that you still need can be collected.

At about 5pm we will have tea so would ask parents all to bring some food for the tea and then at 7 we will be putting on a Pans concert which will be a fundraiser but also to show off what these wonderful children have been doing all day with fantastic. We will also be presenting the special medals for the group who won the Sunderland young achievers award.

OTHER EVENTS
This term there are a number of events coming up including an Athletics event, Boccia and the National Swimming Gala and of course our local swimming gala entry forms will be available on the website Please keep an eye out on the website for what is happening and if anything needs to be added let me know.
