The Kip Cup

Superstar Jnr
With the cricket season drawing to a close, Baston CC members Lloyd Stewart and Jeff Northwood got their heads together to arrange a friendly game between the Cricket Club and chief sponsors The Spinning Wheel, held in memory of Richard “Kip” Broughton, who passed away earlier this year.

Baston CC batted first and got off to a flyer with Guy smashing 30* in no time (including a stunning six over extra cover), supported well by Sporty Scotty who laid down anchor at the other end. With Guy retiring and Banksie getting cleaned up second ball by pro bowler Dish for 0, Young Ant strode to the crease and immediately showed his dad a thing or two about the legside, peppering the infield. He was given out to a dubious LBW though for a promising 8. Sporty accelerated his innings taking apart the part-time bowlers as he notched 22 before getting caught off the bowling of Doug.

Knowing there was 8 overs left and plenty of time to rack up the runs, 11 year old Callum Stewart showed a mean defensive game to see off the better bowlers, as he saw senior players fall around him, with Ben (3) and Anthony (golden) cleaned up by Superstar Liam in the space of 2 balls.

Lloyd played with reckless abandon before being trapped LBW by Charles Clare (White Hair) going for another big whoosh. Chaz was in the action again soon after taking the catch of PJ the DJ. Number 10 Robyn put on a nice partnership with Callum to take the Cricket Club to 107 off their 24 overs; trés modest.

The Spinning Wheel run chase started slowly, mainly thanks to young Anthony Morris swinging the ball around with 2 wicket maidens, clean bowling Doug and one of the hired guns for a golden duck. Parker was out of sorts and was caught and bowled by wily seamer Sporty Scotty. Ringer #2 and Morse look-a-like Martin started slowly but soon found a bit of form, hitting some good runs in the middle order as the Spinner started to climb towards their target. The pro was eventually out for 29, caught by Guy off the bowling of young Callum Stewart.

After struggling with his run up early on, Lloyd’s bezzer Nick Rickett bounced back to clean bowl Dish and they celebrated together like they'd won the ashes. Mick Clare tried to get into his natural big-hitting game as he swung at everything, breaking Liam’s bat in the progress.

Dish!

With 40 still required and time to do it, Jeff joined his son Patrick at the crease. The 2 were going along nicely and with Jeff trying to talk his 9 year old son through his innings, Guy took advantage, picking up a push towards square leg and hurling it at the non-strikers end, running out hapless Jeff (6)

Square Leg umpire Tim also got in the action shortly after, missing the stumps by centimeters as he went for a run-out. Young Patrick batted well beyond his years, but couldn’t build on his score of 4. Chaz was joined at the crease by last man Liam with 23 needed off the last 6 overs.

Liam took apart Guy’s over, including a massive six over deep midwicket, as he tried to protect his partner Chaz from the strike. Young Ant returned to the action bowling at Liam. Liam played him nicely and carefully to propel the score to 105 as he took a single off what he perceived to be the last ball of the over. Umpire Tim said there was still a ball to come, as a nervy Chaz took guard against the impressive youngster. Young Ant naturally obliged with an unstoppable yorker rattling Chaz’s middle stump to give Baston CC a 2 run win, leaving Liam stranded on 18 at the other end… Shame!

Watertight defense!

The 2 teams travelled back to the Spinning Wheel, where Baston CC Invitational XI Captain Lloyd Stewart was presented with the inaugural ‘Kip Cup’ by Spinning Wheel Manager Oliver Dawkins.

With a lot of money on the table, there was no surprises when Man of the Match was awarded to Anthony Morris Jnr, for his 3 wickets.
