Scotland A 26 - 24 England A
Scotland “A” Rugby League secured second position in the Four Nations Championships on Saturday 16-AUG-2008 with a deserved 26-24 win over England. In a close encounter which saw England work tirelessly a massive defensive effort in the closing stages won it for Scotland in the end.
Scotland took the initiative early on with two well worked tries, the first a startling 40 metre break from Currie Rugby Union prop John Cox and the second a well worked try finished by fellow prop Ash Carroll. Both converted by half back Patrick Coupar. Scotland were caught napping out wide ten minutes before half time, allowing England to get back in contention with two quick tries both finished off by winger Jamie Couttes, however a further Scottish try from scrum half Bobby Bahadori kept up the pressure. There was no let up from England as second row Adam Saunders brushed off three defenders, and with the conversion slotted, it left Scotland trailing 18-16 at half time.
After half time, Scotland came racing out of the blocks, first centre David Anderson, put John Cox in for his second try of the game and then Anderson provided the vital pass allowing second row Barry Earl to find space out wide. The score now sat at 26-18, and it sat there for 25 minutes until England winger Jamie Couttes found space out wide, taking advantage of some confusion to score his third of the day and convert to place the pressure back on Scotland. Now at 26-24 Scotland’s defensive stars David Simm and Mike Scott were shining keeping England down in their half, allowing Scotland to nervously run the clock down and claim a sensational victory.
