Carluke Tigers 50 - 22 Paisley Hurricanes

Saturday saw Carluke Tigers come up against last season’s strongest West Coast side, Paisley Hurricanes. The Hurricanes are a side who have been playing rugby league for a few years now, and given their pedigree the Tigers were in for a very hard game, with most of the neutrals expecting the Hurricanes to be too strong. The Tigers were confident of the upset however, particularly after their 64-10 annihilation of Jordanhill Phoenix the previous week.

After kick off was delayed due to traffic problems, the game finally kicked off at 3PM, under what was a scorching sun that would prove to take a lot out of all the players involved. The Tigers kicked off and although in the opening stages Paisley had most of the ball, they certainly were only gaining minimal field position, with huge defensive hits going in from the Tigers. The Tigers then took the game by the scruff of the neck, and proceeded to literally run over the top of the Hurricanes, scoring a barrel load of points in the process!

All the running and attacking of the first half clearly had its effect on the Tigers, with in particular their big forward pack tiring quickly. Paisley saw this and their half backs sped the game up considerably, gaining a few consolation scores in the process, but the result was never in doubt, with Carluke getting a few scores of their own.

Man of the match; Morgan Martin

It was an excellent performance from the Tigers, against a far more experienced opposition. All the lads stood up to be counted and shone through well despite the energy draining heat. Full credit to Paisley, who never gave up and scored a few well worked tries in the second half, but for the second week running Carluke just had too much power and pace for the opposition. The result keeps the Tigers at second in the table, just behind raining champions Edinburgh Eagles.

Next up for the Tigers is the long journey up to Lossiemouth to face Moray Eels. The match will be played at RAF Lossiemouth, and a tough challenge awaits the Tigers against the Airmen. For more info, email thetigers@live.co.uk
