Jordanhill Phoenix 10 - 64 Carluke Tigers
Saturday saw Carluke Tigers play their second competitive rugby league match, this time away from home to fellow Rugby League Conference new boys Jordanhill Phoenix. Both sides went into the match unsure of the unknown quantity that lay ahead, but straight from the kick off the Tigers looked the stronger outfit.
Within minutes the Tigers had streaked ahead with an early score under the posts, but slack defending allowed Phoenix back into the match with a score in reply less than five minutes later. This, however, kicked some life into the Tigers, and after a period of errors from both sides, more scores came from the Tigers, and subsequently they went on to dominate the rest of the match. Phoenix defended bravely, but the Tigers ran in a flood of scores before half time to put the game as good as out of sight.

The opening of the second half saw Phoenix attack with renewed energy, but it just wasn’t enough to breach the Tigers defense. As the Tigers began to find the rhythm they had generated at the end of the first half, their power and pace was far too much for the Phoenix defense to cope with. Although Phoenix continued to perform bravely and stuck in for the whole match, a flood of scores came from the Tigers with try scorers from virtually every position on the field. In the end Phoenix did manage one more try, but it was merely a consolation effort with the game already dead and buried. br>

Coach Morgan Martin was delighted with the performance, sighting in particular the teams drive to continue with 100% effort even once the game was out of sight, in both attack and defense. The Tigers are showing signs of adapting to rugby league very well, with great support play in attack and great pride being taken in the defense of their own try line. This result takes the Tigers to second in the league on point difference.
Next up for the Tigers is a home game against seasoned rugby league outfit Paisley Hurricanes. The Hurricanes were the top side in the West of Scotland last season, and this match will be equally as tough as last weeks encounter with Edinburgh Eagles, where both sides would look strong contenders for a play-off spot if they were to secure the win. The match will be played at Bellshill Academy, with a 2.30PM kick off. All are welcome to attend. For more info, email thetigers@live.co.uk
