Work is beginning on a major development scheme to provide an enlarged pavilion to fully service the needs of users of Lullington Park Cricket Club at their two grounds in a beautiful parkland setting in South Derbyshire.

The new building, designed L-shaped, to give a traditional cricket pavilion frontage to each ground, will have two sets of two changing rooms, with showers and toilets, an umpires room, a large meeting/community use room with kitchen and bar, and for the first time will provide facilities for disabled people. Also incorporated into the scheme is the re-location and re-furbishment of two practice pitches and the provision of two scoreboards.

The project has a total of costing of some £319,000 and has been made possible largely by grant-aid of £132,579 from the Sport England Lottery Fund, together with grants from South Derbyshire District Council, Derbyshire County Council, the Onyx Environmental Trust and the Lords Taverners. Substantial fund raising efforts by club members have completed the funding.

John Cliffe, the club's Chairman, said: "With an expanding membership, we had simply run out of space. Our existing pavilion was sufficient to service the main ground, while those using the second ground had to change in a Portakabin with no other facilities. The available accommodation was cramped for teas, and after games, with insufficient space for meetings - we had to have a bigger building which also provides garage space for the ground equipment, and the confirmation of substantial grant-aid is not only greatly appreciated, but it has made the project possible for us."

Lullington Park run four Saturday senior sides in the Derbyshire County League, with their first team finishing last season third in Division One and retaining the premier cup, the Silver Link Trophy for a second year.
The club also run two Sunday senior sides, together with a dozen junior teams for boys and girls covering age ranges U-11 to U-15, plus a ladies team. Recently awarded the 'Clubmark' certification the club, with a number of qualified coaches, holds weekly practice and coaching sessions for all ages.

Graeme Beaumont, Head of Investment & Quality at Sport England East Midlands said: "When this application came in to us, we could see a clear cricket development plan covering the next five years, and a club that has a proven track record of growth and achievement. The need for the building was justified by the club in terms of servicing the users of the facilities they offer, with a clear need for additional changing, shower and toilets."

"The club has worked hard to ensure that all of our criteria have been met and they have also put in place a sound financial package to enable the works to go ahead."

The contract for the pavilion project has been awarded to the Alrewas based RJK Construction (Midlands) Ltd who are working to a completion date of March next year, enabling the building to be used from the start of the 2004 season.
