July 12th - Reports - firsts lose to leaders
By Andy - July 16 2003
The firsts played well at home to leaders Shipley but ended up losing by 50 runs. The 2nds managed to get a losing draw at Quarndon while the 3rds lost by 73 runs at home to leaders Rosehill Meths. Sunday saw a top performance by the 1sts to chase 252 away at Spondon to move into the semi finals. >
Saturday always looked like being a good game with 1st v 2nd and until the last 10 overs of the game it was. With 10 overs to go we needed 60 runs to win and had 5 wickets left, but a very rapid collapse saw us bowled out with 7 overs left and 50 runs short.

Shipley's strong batted line up started very well and with a late flurry at the end they ended up with 232-9. Andy Goodwin taking 3-69 in 15 overs.

In reply Dave Adams started well with 39 and with Andy Goodwin (68) going well victory was still in sight with 10 overs to go it was not to be.

A game that we could have won and certainly shouldn't have lost.

The seconds travelled to Quarndon and chased leather (to put it politely) as Quarndon's oppeners put on 200 for the first wicket and they both ended up with hundreds. They eventually ended up with 269-2 in 43 overs.

It was always going to be a tall order and we ended up on 189-6 with Richard Jones (76), Joe Eaton (37 not out) and Richard Green (35) all contributing.

The thirds also struggled on Saturday with leaders Rosehill Meths scoring 259-9. Unlike the seconds though they couldn't hold on for the draw and were bowled out for 184, only Ted Shaw offering any resistance with 39.

Sunday

Sunday saw the quarter finals of the cups with only the firsts making it to this stage, they travelled to Spondon in a repeat of last years final.

Spondon batted first and started well but were pegged back by Jonny Shales (4-48) and George Chapman. After a late flurry Spondon saw a competatitve 252-8, on Spondon's small ground certainly not un gettable.

Our reply started badle and after 10 overs we were 22-3, Andy Goodwin and Dave Hartley chanced their arm and started to swing the game back in our favour with a partnership of 124 in 19 overs, with 90 runs being scored between 20 and 30 overs. After Hartley was stumped for 37 the run rate was down to just over 5 for the last 20 overs. Goodwin departed for 88 but Gough kept it going with 66, only getting out when the scores were tied but by then the game was won.

The semi final will be held at Lullington against West Hallam on 3rd August. Will we be able to reach the final for 2 years running.
