Exeter Squad

Exeter Squad Exeter Chiefs have announced their squad for the trip to Otley on 20th September 2003.

Exeter Chiefs coach Ian Bremner has warned his side to brace themselves for a "massive physical test" against Otley tomorrow.

Exeter Chiefs have been forced to make three changes to the side which comprehensively defeated Coventry last weekend at the County Ground.

Alistair Murdoch is out injured so Jimmy Tucker (a utiity back signed from Launceston) fills in at centre on his National League Division One starting debut.

In the forwards, second-row Opeta Palepoi has joined the Samoan World Cup squad and is replaced by the evergreen Dave Sims who returns after completing his ban which carried over from last season.

Danny Porte and Rob Baxter also return from their bans incurred as a result of last season's ill-tempered match with neighbours Plymouth.

Porte takes over from Phil Sluman in the front-row while Baxter takes a place on the bench having recently picked-up a knee injury in a recent fixture between Exeter United and the Westcountry Warriors.

"We're really going to need the experience of those guys on Saturday", said the Irishman. "Otley have set themselves up with two excellent performances, particularly last week at Plymouth - that was top class".

"What they have done is raise the bar in terms of their own performance and expectation levels. So, it means that we have to go up there and brace ourselves for a tough afternoon".

"Not only will they be wanting to impress in front of their own supporters by beating us, but they will pose a massive physical threat, particularly up front".

"They have a pack and two half-backs in Dave Scully and Simon Binns, who will look to really smash it up at us. We have to nullify that threat early and try and force them into a kind of Plan B".

Bremner added: "If we look at previous games up there, they have always been tight and we haven't really ever fully won them until late in the game when our superior fitness has come through. Saturday I think will be much the same".

However, the Chiefs head into tomorrow's clash in confident mood, especially after last Saturday's destruction of visiting Coventry.

"Our first half last weekend was very clinical, it was very good" said Bremner. "We wiped Coventry off the park with a very dynamic display. Now it's important we take that same dynamic approach into this weekend's game".

On the inclusion of Tucker, who joined the club in the summer from Cornish side Launceston, Bremner said: "He had bits and pieces in pre-season, plus the whole second half last week. You could see as the half went on a visible improvement in his game".

"It's obviously been a step up in standards for Jimmy. That's no disrespect to Launceston in any way, but the way we train and the players he is facing each week is much different to what he has in the past. He has some time to settle in, but he has made the transition into our set-up very well," said Bremner.

Exeter have a strong forward pack which is led by a dangerous back-row but Otley should hold no fears having proved more than a match up-front for both Worcester and Plymouth.
