Otley 13 Coventry 32

By Oscar the Otter - March 31 2009
Otley 13 Coventry 32 Otley failed to garner any National League One points from this clash despite matching Coventry for style and determination and looking quite capable of winning until the last quarter when a lack of numbers meant they were unable to make key replacements.

Match Report by John Finch (Otley RUFC Press Officer)

They were given first use of a rare north wind blowing straight down the pitch and good use of it was made by fly half Adam Greendale and full back Ian Shuttleworth.

Their excellent kicking kept the visitors penned in their own territory and it was Otley who were looking dangerous but a ball shaken lose at a tackle gave Coventry possession and they swept upfield to win a penalty under the posts on 13 minutes, which fly half Ben Russell knocked over.

A fine penalty kick from Greendale took Otley to 15 metres and a knock-on gave them an attacking scrum from where centre Kyle Dench slipped through and, when stopped on the line, found the forwards up to finish off, prop Ryan Wederell grounding and Greendale adding the conversion.

Otley went close, running a tap penalty before being a tad unlucky when Russell was remarkably quick up on Greendale as he attempted a grubber kick and it bounced fortuitously for him to gather, race in to the posts and then convert.

A penalty from Greendale had the score 10-10 at half- time but an attack by Coventry after the restart had Otley in trouble and Shuttleworth was given a yellow card for a deliberate infringement and were short of numbers when the ball was run wide, centre Donovan Sanders going over.

A second Greendale penalty when Coventry’s No 6 was yellow-carded brought Otley to within a couple of points, and their confident and adventurous approach held hopes of further scores.

But when Dench was shown yellow for preventing the opposition from taking a quick tap penalty, they were again short in defence when No 8 Laurence McGlone picked up at a five-metre scrum to drive over.

Sanders went in for a second try, both these converted by Russell, and on 80 minutes replacement Thomas Hayes kicked a penalty.
