Otley 48 Blaydon 8
Absolute domination at the set-piece provided Otley with a wealth of possession which was not used effectively in the first half. Four penalties by Adam Greendale and a try by Matt Stockdale gave Otley a 17-3 half-time lead which was added to with five tries in a much better second half performance.

With second-row Richard Snowball pinching almost every Blaydon throw and the front five dismantling their opposition in the scrum, Blaydon were continually starved of any decent possession.

However, Otley were too profligate with this wealth of possession and consequently did not convert their domination into points on the scoreboard for much of the first half.

Four penalties (2 from wide out on the half-way line) from the assured boot of fly-half Adam Greendale were the only points to be added in the first half to an early score in the corner from back-rower Matt Stockdale following several phases of well-worked play.

With kicking from hand now being purposefully utilised to obtain territorial advantage, Otley soon found themselves camped on the Blaydon line. At a 5m scrum, Otley's tight-head prop Kris Fullman was clearly causing problems for his opposite number. Even when awarded a penalty for a scrummaging offence, Otley elected to inflict more damage at the set-piece and scrummaged again. The referee eventually lost patience and correctly awarded Otley a penalty try which Greendale converted to make it 24-3 after 47 minutes.

The next try was the best of the match. A cross-field kick behind the Blaydon defence on half-way was collected by on-rushing left winger Danny Smith who then drew the full-back on the inside to the supporting Stockdale to score his second try next to the posts. Greendale converted and Otley led 31-3.

Otley's "bonus point" fourth try came after 65 minutes when replacement prop Ryan Wederall crashed over in the corner to make it 36-3 following good work by the pack.

Right winger Kyle Dench scored the two final tries. First of all, he evaded his man to scorch in at the corner after scrum-half Guy Easterby and Greendale had transferred play to the short-side and his second try was another excellent effort.

Flanker Xavier Andre made the initial break from his own 22 and then replacement No.8 Max Lewis (on loan from Leeds Carnegie) was in support to take play into the visitors half. The ball was recycled to the right and full-back Ian Shuttleworth made a searing break before offloading a reverse pass to Kyle Dench who cut back on the angle before diving under the posts. Greendale converted to leave the scoreline at 48-8 at the final whistle.

A second solid victory of the season with many things to take forward in the coming weeks starting with the first away trip of the season to Westcombe Park in Orpington, Kent followed by two home fixtures against Halifax and Southend.
