Members of the Pink Ba bas were among the first to arrive at the ground and duly picked up the stash, 12 pink figure hugging rugby shirts. Dressed in their new shirts the Pink Ba Bas brought to mind the athletic toned figures of young Amazonian princesses, except Joey Duggan, whose profile was reminiscent of a young Homer Simpson.
The squad assembled , including the now familiar faces of Captain Sammy Wilson, Michelle Kendell, Joey Duggan, Julie ‘banana’ Chow, Clare ‘poppy’ Hoppe, Just Jessie M, Tamsin Reed, Toni ‘Miss Barbados’ Corbin, Katie ‘selfish’ Pickle (if that is in fact her real name), Kate Clements and Eryka ‘make room for me’ Wessell.
The half time whistle from the preceding match signalled the start of the warm up. Pickle led the dynamic warm up; the usual bum flicks and lunges were joined by a new exercise, the ‘ba ba’ walk. Designed by Pickle to warm up the shoulders, hips and hooves, the Ba Bas walked on all fours across the grid. This reporter thinks the inspiration for this exercise may have come from one of Pickle’s Magners fuelled Saturday nights, when she may or may not have been seen crawling home from the Sun Inn.
As the Pink BB’s took the field many important questions were being asked; “Would the ba ba defence hold up?”, “Would the attack be effective?”, “Would the double layered shirts prevent visible nipple hardness in this chilly wind?”
The Pink BB’s started the first game against Wimbledon in a familiar way, like headless sheep, but soon settled to a steady flowing game. Wimbledon’s steely defence was penetrated a few minutes into the game by Pickle. Miss Barbados followed in support, quite why, this reporter is not sure. As all Pink Ba Bas know, Katie Pickle’s middle name is ‘selfish’! At that moment a pink sheep flew above the pitch and Pickle passed the ball to Toni, gifting her a try in the left hand corner. Quite if these two events are connected, this reporter is not sure. But one thing is for certain; miracles often happen in 3’s so get your lottery tickets for Saturday night girls, it could be you!
The Pink Ba Bas finished that match 35 – 0, but feared that a sterner test lie ahead from Black Magic. The battle ahead would prove to be on Jedi / Empire proportions. As the Black Magic from the Dark side took on the Pink Jedi Knights. To start off with the Black Magic prevailed with a well worked try. But the force is strong in the Pink Ba Bas and soon they began to play the flowing brand of rugby for which they are renowned. The Pink BB’s were up 2 trys to 1 at the beginning of the second half, with a lineout on the 5 metre line. Hooker Joey Duggan threw to Eryka coming into the lineout, Eryka leapt in the manner of a sheep over a fence at bedtime. The perfectly weighted pass when to straight to hand, Eryka went straight through the defence and Pink Ba Bas were 2 scores clear. This reporter knows that we won that match but by how much she is not sure.
Altogether this was a triumphant start to the 7’s league for the Pink Ba Bas and long may it continue, as one supporter was heard saying, ‘those Pink Ba Bas can actually play’
