Match report for the game against Westoe (or South Tyneside) on Sunday

Following a mystery tour around the suburbs of South Tyneside and a visit to every Newsagent in Geordieland to ask directions we arrived a little late for kick off.

The delay must have inspired Redcar who came out of the blocks at full pace and for 7 minutes Westoe did not know how to deal with the powerful forward surges of the 2 Steves (Johnson & Wilson) Mike Philo & Luke Gaffney. Resolute defence kept the visitors out and Andy Benbow And Danny Bowstead both went close but unfortunately the line could not be broken.

Westoe slowly started to gain in confidence and their excellent No 10 dummied his way over the line from the half way untouched by the Redcar defence. The half continued in the same manner and whilst the forwards were evenly matched with Redcar just edging it the Westoe Backs led by their No 10 dominated the open play. They scored 3 further First half tries to lead 22 nil at half time.

The second half saw Redcar play with the wind and excellent kicking from Andy B put Westoe under pressure and following an t forward drive From The 2 Steves and Joe Parker Graham Playfair forced his way over the line to score his first try of the season.

Redcar were unable to keep the Westoe backs at bay despite some fine tackling from Luke Gaffney, Mike Philo and Mike Bloom and Westoe scored again in the corner.

Redcar again pressurised and Luke Gaffney scored from short range closely followed by Andy Benbow. Neither he nor Mike Hammond were able to convert.

Westoe scored 2 further tries before the close and Andy Benbow went within a yard of scoring from the Half way line before the final whistle blew at Westoe 42 Redcar 15.

All in all a pretty competitive game with 2 evenly matched sets of forwards. Whilst the scoreline slightly flattered Westoe the game was dominated by the play of their excellent fly half.

We can look forward to next weeks home game against Ponteland with confidence,

Mick
