Redcar v Whitby – 03/10/2004
Under 12s
This was Redcars first match of the season with a newly formed team that have trained together throughout the summer.
Whitby kicked off and the Redcar forwards of Mitch, Callum Walker, Tom Cox, David Marshall and James Wooley took the game to Whitby with powerful drives presenting the ball for the next forward to take it on again and again. This continued until the ball was taken to ground then the impressive new partnership of Luke Edwardson (Scrum half) and Craig Newlands (Fly half) took over. The game was then opened up bringing the rest of the Redcar backs of Josh Caddy, Perry Goodwin, Andrew Little, Robert Froom and Jay Bowie into the game. This was the way the game continued throughout with Whitby counterattacking with some breakaway tries due to the odd bit of loose play by Redcar.
At half time there was a change around with Callum Jowsey, Harry Challinor, Mark Steventon, Daniel Gaffney, Michael Wright, coming on for Redcar. Ryan O’Connor unselfishly played the full game for Whitby and Michael Lee, Michael Wright, Mark Steventon and another played half a game.
Redcar took an early lead 14-0 but Whitby never gave up and kept pegging the score back slightly, the final score was 42-29 to Redcar with Craig Newlands converting all 6 tries. The try scorers were Craig Newlands 3 tries, Mitch 2 tries and Josh Caddy 1 try. The game was allowed to flow with some impressive open play by local referee Joe Walker.
All players played well and this was a very pleasing first match of the season for the Redcar coaches, Alan Dixon, Dave Rae and Peter Edwardson with more to come from the Redcar team.
Redcar v Acklam – 10/10/2004
Under 12s
Redcar travelled to Acklam and because of the large squads agreed to play 3, 20 minute sessions. Redcar started very strongly with forwards David Marshall, James Wooley, Perry Goodwin, Callum Walker and Michael Wright taking the game to Acklam with some powerful runs and good support. The new combination of Luke Edwardson and Andrew Little, Scrum half and Fly half kept the rest of the backs of Jay Bowie, Josh Caddy, Robert Froom, Josh Dixon and Callum Jowsey in the game and saw some very good running into Acklam territory.
Tries came from Jay Bowie, Luke Edwardson and Perry Goodwin with 3 conversions from Josh Dixon for redcar to lead 21-0.
Both teams made substitutions at the beginning of the 2nd session, Redcar brought on Ryan Thompson, Joe Warrior, Harry Challinor, and Tom Cox. We saw Acklam come back into the game and bring the scores to 21-7 but it was quite evenly fought with a lot of midfield play with neither team making much headway.
In the final session there were more substitutions with Redcar bringing on Mathew Steventon, Michael Lee, Daniel Gaffney and James Carroll. This was very hard fought with both sides having chances but tiredness was setting in with a few mistakes being made. The final score was Redcar 28 Acklam 21, the final Redcar try coming from David Marshall which Josh Dixon again converted.
