Old Crossleyans Preview

By Monkey Business - February 24 2011
Hartlepool Rovers head to Halifax on Saturday to take on Old Crossleyans in a vital North One East relegation clash (kick off 2.15pm).

Four successive defeats have plunged Old Crocs into the bottom three and they also have the leakiest defence in the league having conceded 460 points from 17 games. Last Saturday they were hammered 45-0 at Wheatley Hills where we also came unstuck and the previous weeks saw them go down 36-11 at Durham City and 28-23 at Team Northumbria in between which they lost at home to West Hartlepool 12-3.

The tight pitch at Broomfield Avenue is a big advantage for Crocs but the Whites have proved on their last three visits that they can adapt to the small playing area from their home turf on the Friarage.

The last games in Halifax have seen Crocs narrowly win 16-14 last season; Rovers win by the same score in 2007/08 and Crocs triumph 15-10 in 2006-07. The Friaragemen have everything to play for, therefore, and they must set out to take the four points on offer. These results suggest that another close contest is likely and neither side could be confident of getting a try bonus point although a losing bonus point could be on the cards. In the past games have been won or lost through the boot with the small pitch bringing many penalties within kicking distance.

Last week’s 10-0 defeat at Driffield possibly makes the Woldsmen safe but the five sides below them: Morpeth played 15 points 29; Pontefract P16 pts 27; Crocs P17 pts 23; Northern P15 pts 21 and Rovers P17 pts 12 have it all still to do.

Losing the last three games, all winnable, has not helped Rovers and another defeat at Crocs would probably seal our fate even though there is still a third of the season to go.

Player-coach Alan Brown makes a couple of changes to his side, with Darren Smith stepping in for the unavailable Simon Hall. There is also good news with skipper Michael Thubron appearing in the lineup after he was forced off the field last week with an injury. Brown drops himself down on to the bench where he will be alongside Andrew Arnell and Andrew Egglestone.

Rovers: Masshedar, Lilley, Foreman, Coulson, B Cushlow, Sainty, King, Tucker, J Cushlow, I Pinchen, A Pinchen, Thubron (c), Grazier, Dring, D Smith. Subs: A Arnell, A Brown, Egglestone

Nice to see Darren Smith in at No 8. He is the fittest forward in the club and will do well in any position. Nothing to lose at Crocs and everything to gain.Best of luck to everyone.

I am sure they will. The club should mould their team around players like Massendhar, the Smiths,Grazier,Sainty, the Cushlows, the Pinchens, Dring, Austwicke and Hally with young Power and Thubron to guide them and the future will be bright. Cut these lads open and you'd get red, black and white right through. Never mind Blackpool rock what about Hartlepool rock??

Im sure if i was either of the following lilley, kingy, tucker, Foreman or Coulson then i wouldnt be happy with your ridiculous statements Gentle Giant! Every man starting for Rovers on Saturday should get the same amount of respect not just the favourites!

i agree with gentle giant in that lilley, kingy, tucker, Foreman and Coulson are the weak links in our strong team and Massendhar, the Smiths,Grazier,Sainty, the Cushlows, the Pinchens, Dring, Austwicke and Hally with young Power and Thubron are much better players

I certainly did not mean to "pick out favourites" as Westie88 put it and nobody has ever called me "ridiculous" before - quite hurtful really if it had come from a Rover but a Westie commenting on Rovers affairs doesn't upset me - too much!!As far as respect is concerned Westie88, I respect any player who pulls on a Rovers shirt.Within the list I made I WAS SIMPLY POINTING OUT SOME OF THE PLAYERS WHO HAD SHOWN 100% LOYALTY AND EFFORT TO THE TEAM DESPITE THE DECLINE IN RESULTS. MESSERS COULSON,TUCKER,LILLEY,FOREMAN AND KING ARE FINE PLAYERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT BUT ALL HAVE LEFT ROVERS FOR OTHER CLUBS TO SEEK FAME (AND IN SOME CASES, FORTUNE). I was looking to lads who can stand up and honestly state that Rovers is the team to play for.The friendship in the club is excellent and team spirit is great despite the shocking results of late.At least the players currently giving their all for the club can walk into the famous old clubhouse and feel apart of it.

bit harsh on kingy that like. he was harldy seeking fame a fortune dropping down 3/4 levels to play was he? from what i can see he went due to not getting a fair look in at rovers . its lads like that use should be building your side around, gifted young players, not ripping into them on a internet message board for all the rugby community round the town to see!

It appears I've ruffled Rupert's feathers somewhat. If you care to read what I wrote, Rupert, I don't think in anyway I was "ripping into" Tom at all. I merely meant that if you are building a team you can rely on you need sound foundations to do so otherwise the whole thing will collapse. Some players flit from club to club to seek a game. Tom went down two leagues and performed really well.A true club man, in my opinion, would stay at his club and fight for his place despite perhaps being inferior to the man currently occupying the jersey. I can sympathise with Tom for his reason for leaving but it was only a matter of time before his main rival was going to up and leave which ultimately he did. Tom, perhaps should have taken a leaf out of the late, great Stan Ainsley's book who played second fiddle to Wilf Woodward for years. He could have gone to any club in the county and played first team rugby but Stan decided to play for Rovers second team and wait his chance. Indeed, he was the county's second choice when Wilf was injured.Eventually Stan got a decent run in the Rovers first team until he retired. So come on Rupert, I am NOT having a go at Tom. I hope he stays at Rovers for many years and we CAN build a team around him and ALL the young, talented players at Rovers. I apologise if I have missed anyone out!Billingham have done it magnificently so why can't we?

tom signed for old boys because of westgarth and craig lee. and not becouse he couldnt get his game.. ill think you will find that tom has played more games on the wing for rovers 1st than scrum half so what does that say?. he told me he had already made his mind up to sign for us (oldboys) when westgarth and craig lee left. as far as i know tom has all ways been a rovers lad and always will be, it was only a season and he is a young lad...
lastly gentle giant i think you should do your homework before you rant on...

didnt power leave rovers for darlo then come back?
isnt thubby a horden lad ?
mash played for west then tech befre rovers?
pinhead also left for tech then came back?
graizer too went to seaton then came back

personally i dont think its not a bad thing have the above players going to a club for a season and going back to there roots. all these players have come on leaps and bounds doing what they have done

ruffled no feathers giant but i think if you look at teh bigger picture it brought toms game wounders dropping down and playing in his best position, rather than been on the fringes of your first team playing out of position. so dont knock him for doing it as it benefited our club and yours!
