Hi Paul,
Oldandfat is Mr Andrew Townsin, I believe him to be our longest serving player at around 26 years running! (Although running was probably a bad choice of word these days! sorry Towns). My name is Jon Howard, I edit and manage the site, also for my sins I am vice-captain to our skipper Mr Tim Dyer. I have been a bit lazy lately and not been updating the site but come the summer I hope to have match reports published every week.
I recognise some of the names on the list, however only from chat across the bar in the Spinning Wheel, Andrew may know them more then I do as I have only been with Baston about 7 years. I’m sorry to have to tell you but I believe John Clark, Percy Rous and Ted Clare have passed away.
Your philosophy about a good day out being more important than the winning is more appropriate than you will ever know about the current team! In fact that may be a tad harsh as we finished about half way up the South Lincs & Border League 2 at the end of last season and in recent times have acquired some talented young players. Generally we play to have a damn good laugh and a damn good drink afterwards belittling players for their cock-ups during the game but we all most definitely play to win!
Before I started playing we had moved to play at Langtoft, the reasons for this Andrew will be able to enlighten you on more than I. I am however pleased to tell you the last two years we have been back at 'The Shrine' Baston where we look after the pitch ourselves. The pitch is far from the best in the league but we do the best we can, I don’t know if it was different when you played at Baston but now a days 150 batting first puts you in a very strong position in the match.
We raise funds these days through players paying match subs and holding a race night in the local every year which keeps us a float!
I’ll have the fixtures for the forthcoming season on the site in the next few weeks so if and when you are in the country you can come and have a watch, not much changed I wouldn’t have thought although the old ‘pavilion’ or ‘chicken hut’ as it was affectionately known has now been demolished. We now have revamped changing facilities over in the barn that we use.
If you bring your whites along when driving by the chances are you will get a game opening the bowling and batting three!
Cheers
Jon Howard
