Duck for Brear A Graham McDonough inspired Shipley beat Stabbo
By Adam Harchuk - July 17 2003
On a baking hot day at Shipley, this title crunch match was a crucial one for both sides. 1st against 2nd always brings out some special performances and it did just that as players from both sides did their best in this important match .... >
After winning the toss on a belter of a track Stapleford to do bat 1st in this one of the biggest games of Staplefords season so far. In the absence of Ian Walker, Jim Wright was promoted to open the innings for the 2nd successive time against Shipley this season. His opening partner was the leagues leading run scorer Andy Brear. Brear after a failure the week before, was certainly looking to get Stapleford to a big score in this big game, but it was curtains for Brear in just 1 ball as in the 2nd over Anders Carrington, who got his man 4 for at Stapleford, got Brear lbw with a low full toss. Carrington has only bowled 6 balls at Brear this season and claimed his wicket twice at the cost of just 4 runs. The In-form Mark Fletcher came in to join Wright but in the 8th over with the score on 18, Anders Carrington struck again as Wright played on for just 2. Adam Harchuk came in to join Mark Fletcher. With both players in form, much relied on these two players. Anders Carrington (5-1-11-2) was forced out of the attack with his asthma and woudnt bowl another ball in the match and his early damage did so much in Shipley getting such a good start. James Turner (9-3-15-0) supported Carrington well with the new ball. So with both opening bowlers taking a rest, they were replaced by David Farnsworth (5-0-28-0) and giant 15 year old Ryan North (5-0-27-0) but in this 10 over spell Stapleford accumilated 55 runs and after such a good start from Shipley, Fletcher and Harchuk started to accelerate in near to perfect batting conditions. The introduction of Graham McDonough arrived as this partnership threatened to take the game away from Shipley. He was hard to get away in his early overs and in his 4th over got his reward as he dropped one short to Harchuk who went to pull the ball, was bowled for 45. His innings contained 9 fours and this dismissal ended a fine partnership of 88. Paul Fletcher entered the fray next for Stapleford at 105-3 and was soon on his way as he was given out lbw for 5. General concensus was that it wasnt the best decision. Mark Cliff came in at number 6 but was walking back shortly after as he was bowled by McDonough for 5. Steve Halford was the next lower order batsman to disappoint as McDonough got one through his defences for a duck. Richard Swain also came and went as he was the 3rd batsman to be given lbw for just 6 to give McDonough is 5th wicket. Two good catches were to follow as John Parkinson fell to a good catch at point by Danny Brandrick for 4, then next ball Richmond fell to a blinder of a catch by Ryan North in the gully, both off McDonough. Number 3 Mark Fletcher was still there though cashing on on the loose ball. The last 4 overs were crucial as at 177-9 this was no where near a good enough score. Simon Bartles helped Fletcher see out these overs and also help Fletcher reach a chanceless century which included 13 fours and a six. Bartles was bowled with the 2nd ball of the last over for 4 to give Graham McDonough a fine 8 wicket haul. His final analysis was 12.2-50-8 and his accuracy was the key to all his wickets. Mark Fletcher remained unbeaten on 103 to get Stapleford to 193. Without his contribution and Harchuk's 45, the score would have been embarrassing as no other players reached double figures. The next highest score was extras with 19. James Turner (14-4-37-0) kept the pressure on to bowl a good tight spell and Matt Abbott (4-0-20-0) gave handy support.
After a tea of sanwiches, pasta, peaches and ice cream, Shipley began their reply. Dave Cokayne and Dave Shaw opened. Paul Fletcher and Rich Swain (8-2-17-0) opened the bowling for Stapleford. Shipley got the score to 43 when Paul Fletcher found the edge of Shaw's bat and John Parkinson behind did the rest. Parkinson was in the action again as Harchuk found the edge of Danny Brandrick's bat to send him back for 0. Robinson then was bowled by Paul Fletcher also for 0 to leave Shipley at 49-3 and in a very precarious position. Matt Abbott came out next and clubbed a quick fire 20 but was forced to retire hurt with a hand injury. Graham McDonough came out to replace Abbott. McDonough high in confidence after his bowling haul soon got stuck into the Stapleford attack with some good attacking play. He was particularly harsh on Brear (2-0-18-0) and Halford (3-0-21-0). Stapleford tried their guts out but couldnt find a way through the rock of David Cokayne and the attacking brilliance of McDonough. This combo was a winning one as Stapleford just couldnt break the pair up. Cokayne had some good fortune as he edged Paul Fletcher (14-3-53-2) through vacent slip corden gaps but all in all was a brick wall to ball at. Harchuk (13-3-58-1) gave his all but it wasnt good enough as Cokayne hit 12 boundaries in his unbeaten 69 and McDonough caned 14 fours and a six in his unbeaten 79. Shipley after that shakey start just showed why they are top of the division and nothing short of a miracle will stop them from running away with the 4N title. Shipley knocked off the required 194 with a couple of overs to spare.

Final Result

Shipley Hall (22) 194-3 (D Cokayne 69*, McDonough 79*) beat Stapleford Town (5) 193 all out (M Fletcher 103*, Harchuk 45, McDonough 8-50) by 7 wickets

Meanwhile on the Sunday, the 2nds bowed out of the Harry Lund Cup at A&B by 51 runs. A&B managed 188-7 in their 46 overs. Beresford getting an unbeaten 54. Best bowling comng from Steve Morley (10-2-38-2) and Manders (10-2-22-2) but in reply wickets fell early as the top order found the going tough. Skipper Steve Morley did his upmost to keep Stapleford in the game, but he lost support from his lower order. When he was last out for 64 it marked a good effort from A&B as off spinner Lewis did the damage taking 6-14.

Final Result
Alvaston & Boulton 188-7 (J Beresford 54*) beat Stapleford Town 137 all out (S Morley 64, Lewis 6-14) by 51 runs
