Mark Fletcher 35 Selston snatch win with 1 wkt and 1 ball to spare
By Adam Harchuk - June 30 2003
In conditions perfect for cricket, bottom of the table Selston visited The Rec. Stapleford were missing star man Andy Brear, Paul Harrison, Jim Wright, Ian Brackenbury and John Parkinson from the 1st choice line up, but with the 2nd team not having a game, replacements were brought in ... >
Selston won the toss and on a wet wicket chose to field first. In the absence of Andy Brear, Mark Fletcher went up to open the innings with Mark Cliff, but captain for the day Cliff fell lbw without scoring to Dylan Hopkinson with the score on just 11. Ian Walker came out number 3 and batted with caution along with Fletcher who had recognised what role he had to play in the absence of Brear. Dawes came into the attack to replace Paul Spray (11-3-30-0) who had bowled a steady opening stint. Dawes had instant sucess as Walker after doing all the hard work, played all round a full ball and was bowled for 23 having hit 3 fours. He was replaced by in-form 2nd team keeper Brian Morley who rotated the strike well with Fletcher, but with 35 to his name, Fletcher hit a wide one straight to extra cover off Hopkinson, where Davies took the catch. Paul Fletcher replaced his brother, but was immidiately involved in a misunderstanding with Brian Morley who found himself ran out for 6 after a good pick up and throw from the fielder. Unwell Adam Harchuk came to the crease at a lowly number 6 but his early strokeplay suggested he was feeling great as his first three balls from Dawes went for 10 runs. Hopkinson (14-1-38-2) finished a very tidy spell of bowling and was replaced by leg spinner Trower. He has success in his third over as Paul Fletcher looked to hit a short ball but spooned up a catch to Berridge who took the catch at no less than the 7th attempt (a juggling effort!). Much depended on Harchuk now who was joined by Halford. Halford hit Dawes for four but in Trower's next over he went to sweep a ball which he nicked behind and was also stumped as Halford hadnt relised the ball was in the keepers gloves. In came 2nd team captain Steve Morley to join Harchuk. Harchuk continued to hit boundaries as Dawes came in for more treatment as he strayed down legside and dropped short too often. When Morley got down Dawes' end, he played across the line and was plum lbw without scoring. Richard Swain at number 9 was really the only man left who could bat as him and Harchuk added 25 valuable runs until in the last over Harchuk hit a powerful drive off Dawes straight to Hopkinson at long off who took a good catch above his head. Harchuk fell for 32 having hit 5 fours. Swain also fell in late dash for runs in the last over. He was stumped off Dawes for 10. 2nd teamers Adey Colley and young Jason O'Dell hit a single each to leave Stapleford on 149-9 after 46 overs. Not a bad effort on a wet wicket against some very tidy bowling by Selston. Dawes finished with good figures of 12-1-45-4 and Trower 9-1-25-2.
In reply dangerman Ed Storr's middle stump was sent cartwheeling by Richard Swain for 6, but Berridge and Davies look to set a foundation in chasing this low score. Having survived a very ropey bump ball not out decision, Berridge (13) went to drive Swain and was caught well by Brian Morley who had to go low and dive forward to take a smart catch. Smith came in and soon went 1st ball after drinks, bowled by Halford for 5. But the partnership of the match was about to take place as Davies and an aggressive Paul Spray looked to take the attack to Stapleford. Heads dropped and this down and out attitide that Stapleford were showing, soon had a shock to the system as the batting pair had a misunderstanding mid pitch, but it took an amazing bit of fielding from Swain who swooped at mid wicket, picked up 1st time and threw a direct hit at the keepers end to run Davies out for a fine 37. Dawes came in and Harchuk was somewhat belatedly brought into the attack and was instructed to bowl yorkers as the bat of Spray was certainly flying. Harchuk dropped a couple short but then got into the groove with some good yorkers and hit Spray full on the toe. The umpire judged the ball to be missing leg stump, but shortly after another ball directed at his toes had Spray walking back as he was bowled for 33. Paul Fletcher (14-3-46-3) came back on at the other end and claimed the wickets of Young (4) Hopkinson (10) and Davies (14) to leave Selston needing 3 runs to win from the very last over of the innings. Confusion set in as Swain (14-1-39-2) was about to bowl the last over, was held back by the scorers who had spotted he had bowled his full 14 overs. So a massive decision was needed by stand in captain Mark Cliff, who had to decide who was to bowl this final over. Harchuk (7-3-28-1) was the obvious choice, but Cliff chose to gamble by bowling spinner Steve Halford. With Dawes being caught on the boundary in the last over, the batsmen had crossed which left a young junior in S.Egan to have the strike for this last over. To follow was another junior so Stapleford may have seen an opening. The 1st 3 balls were not scored off as the pressure mounted. The 4th ball saw Trower scream Egan through for a single to get the man back on strike, which he suceeded doing, but ran out his partner in the process. So Egan was run out for 0 and last man Edson came out. So it was 3 runs to win from 2 balls with the field out. Steve Halford bowled the ball, but to Stapleford's dismay, it was far to short from the spinner and Trower pulled it through square leg where there was a vacent gap to hit the winning runs for Selston. He finished unbeaten on 7 and confined Stapleford to a third straight defeat at the hands of opposition they were expected to beat. Selston to their credit stuck to their task well and after looking down and out in the last over, sparked a fantastic win which may give them confidence to rise up the table after an indifferent start.

Final Result

Stapleford Town (6) 149-9 (M Fletcher 35, Harchuk 32, Dawes 4-45) lost to Selston Town (22) 151-9 (Davies 37, P Spray 33, P Fletcher 3-46) by 1 wicket
