Mark Antill and Dennis Saunders opened for Duffield. 4th ball Antill had a let off as he was dropped by stand in keeper Mark Fletcher off brother Paul. His luck however ran out when he was bowled round his legs for 14 off Paul Fletcher. Saunders fell next as he played across the line of an away swinger and got a leading edge to Walker in the covers off the bowling of Adam Harchuk. So at 24-2 work was needed to be done. Bygraves jnr has joined Wendan, but Bygraves after a very patient innings was caught behind for 1 off Harchuk. After 20 overs the score was 47-3 and both opening bowlers had finished their full stint of overs. Paul Fletcher again proved what an asset he is with ball as he finished with oustanding figures of 10-4-15-1 and Adam Harchuk gave good support (10-2-31-2). They were replaced in the attack by Swain and Halford. Halford had immidiate success as he trapped Jerry Bygraves in front lbw for 8, then Wendan after a fluent 29, found Brear at mid wicket to leave Duffield 74-5. Danny Stevenson was now in and much depended on him as Wood fell next bowled by Richard Swain for 6. Stevenson batted very well hitting the bad ball and steeling the strike when necessary. After putting on 24, White chopped on to Brear for 6, then Mason was run out for 0 to leave Duffield on 118-8. Bishop then joined Stevenson. Bishop contributed just 5 to the partnership of 30 but gave great support. Bishop was bowled by Brear for 5 in the closing overs. Ellis came in and took the score to 151-9 with Stevenson, who had played a valuable knock for his side. He has hit 5 fours in his unbeaten 58. Not only did he hit the bad ball but ran very well between the wickets. Richard Swain (10-0-23-2) and Steve Halford (10-0-32-1) bowled well but Duffield attacked 5th bowler Brear (6-0-43-2) to good effect as they did well getting to 151 after the position they were in at one stage.
Staplefords reply was certainly something to forget as they gave an abysmal showing in reply to this 151. Cliff fell was caught 8, Mark Fletcher caught for 6, Harchuk ran out by Brear for 1, Paul Fletcher lbw for 1, and Ian Walker played a dreadful pull shot, also fell for 1 to leave Stapleford at 88-5. Dangerman Andy Brear was still at the crease and when he fell to Mark Antill with the score at 114 for 85 the game was all but over. He had hit 12 fours and 2 sixes and had become the 1st man to pass 1000 runs in the County league this season. Paul Harrison, in trying to let the ball go, edged Antill to 1st slip who took a fine juggling effort, then hero of the last round Ian Brackenbury skied Antill to cover for a duck. Any final hopes lasted with Jim Wright and when his middle stump was sent on its way by Antill, the game was Duffields. But last wicket pair Steve Halford and Richard Swain took the score to 135 until White had Halford caught brilliantly by the keeper for 7 to give Duffield victory by 16 runs. Richard Swain had finished unbeaten with 6. With the exception of Harchuk, Paul Fletcher and Richard Swain, it must be said every other player gave their wickets away in awful fashion. It showed as only Brear got into double figures, next top score was Mark Cliff with 8. SHOCKING! Anymore performances like that will certainly end in more defeats for Stapleford Town this season. Duffield it must be said took all their catches and fielded really well. Pete Ellis used all his experience in skittling the top order with a great spell of 10-4-28-4 and all rounder Mark Antill who's 2nd spell certainly swung the match, finished with figures of 10-4-22-4. Danny Stevenson who had hit 58 earlier in the day, kept things tight in the middle with a good spell of slow left arm with figures of 10-0-23-0. Duffield were the better side on the day and deserved their 16 run vicory.
Final Result
Stapleford Town 135 all out (Brear 85, Antill 4-22, Ellis 4-28) lost to Duffield 151-9 (D Stevenson 58*) by 16 runs
With the 1sts out the cup, the 2nds hopes of winning the Harry Lund were kept alive as they beat Matlock by 7 wickets. Matlock were all out for 176. Skipper Steve Morley took 5-38 and newcomer Newell took 3-35. In reply it was another Morley affair as Brian Morley jnr hit a well played 60 and skipper Steve clubbed 43 to give Stapleford victory.
Final Result
Matlock 176 all out (Hawkmoon 55, Yeomans 31, S Morley 5-38, Newell 3-35) lost to Stapleford Town 180-3 (B Morley 60, S Morley 43) by 7 wickets
