Andy Brear 125 Stapleford edge Langley Mill by 2 wkts in thriller
By Adam Harchuk - June 5 2003
Stapleford arrived at Langley Mill in good conditions with the sun beating down with a lovely breeze. Andy Brear lost the toss again and for the 2nd time this weekend, the opposition chose to bat first ..... >
Langley Mill openers Paul Bailey and Steve Mee opened for Langley Mill and were soon into their stride as Mark Cliff and Mark Fletcher strayed far too often. In the 10th over with the score on 59, Mee, who had struck 4 sweetly timed fours of Mark Fletcher had some dreadful luck as he played a forward defensive and the ball rolled back and knocked a bail off. Mee out for 23. Tullett came to the crease and was certainly looking to get on with it. He struck 6 fours in 28 until he was bowled by Andy Brear. Andrew Ball came to the crease with the score on 111 off just 17 overs. He joined Bailey who was looking in immense touch and was striking the ball with ease. After 25 overs the score read 148-2. Brear introduced Harchuk into the attack. This proved to be a good move as he bowled a good line and length and the scoring rate dropped rapidly. He bowled in tandum with Paul Harrison who bowled very well with his off spin. In the context of all the blazing hitting Harrison had bowled 10-0-35-0 which was a cracking spell on a belter of a track. Drinks were taken at 30 overs and Paul Bailey after hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes in his 66 nicked one beind to Parkinson off Harchuk 3rd ball after the drinks interval. Hallsworth came in and was being tied down by some good bowling. Ball had got to 39 when he felt the pressure and found Brear at long off, off the bowling of Harchuk for 39. Captain Davey came in and was looking for some big sixes to finish off the innings. He didnt disappoint as he struck 3 fours and 3 sixes in 43*. Harchuk finished with 10-0-41-2 which dragged Stapleford back into the game and restricted the Millers to 252-5.
Stapleford got off to a steady start as Ian Walker and Andy Brear put in 49 until Ball found the egde and Walker was caught behind for 11. Mark Fletcher came in to join Brear but Fletcher played second fiddle in a partnership of 83. Paul Bailey got one to misbehave off a length and Fletcher nicked behind for 27. Harchuk, Wright and Harrison all got bowled by off spinner Steve Bailey for 2,2 and one respectivly. Then Cliff followed lbw for 2 to Tullett to leave Stapleford 171-6 looking a bit shakey. Andy Brear was still there playing really well and keeping Stabbo up with the run rate. He found an excellent partner in Ian Brackenbury who played some great shots of his own, including a well struck 6 off Ball. With 15 to win Stapleford hearts went as Andy fell victim to the gay glide and was bowled by Andrew Ball for 125 which included 9 fours and 5 sixes. He came off to a fine round of applause from the Langley players and crowd. It was a top innings which kept Stapleford in the game. With 15 still to win off the final 3 overs there still was work to be done. Parkinson joined Brackenbury and put on a crucial stand until Parkinson was bowled by Ball for 3. Swain joined Brackenbury. 3 runs were needed off the last over to be bowled by Paul Bailey. Brackenbury got a single off the first ball then Swain played a fine lofted drive over cover to seal a remarkable win by 2 wickets. It had been a cracking game of cricket and was played in brilliant spirit by both sides. Staplefords hero at the end was Ian Brackenbury, he finished unbeaten on 33 which included 2 fours and a six. A top effort under pressure. Rich Swain finished unbeaten on 3. Langley Mill fought hard all the way and were indebted to fine bowling spells from Andrew Ball 10-2-37-3 and Steve Bailey 10-0-35-3. The match finished just in time as the heavens opened shortly after play had finished.

Final Result

Langley Mill Utd 252-5 (P Bailey 66 Ball 39 Davey 43*) lost to Stapleford Town 253-8 (Brear 125 Brackenbury 33* Ball 3-37 S.Bailey 3-35) by 2 wickets

Meanwhile the 2nd team made it 2 wins out of 2 under skipper Steve Morley as they beat Swarkstone by 7 wickets. Swarkie made 194-8 with Steve Morley taking 3-21. He then excelled with bat scoring 83* assisted by Cliff Richmond who scored 41* to give the 2s victory by 7 wickets.
