Brear, Stabbos Lara? Stapleford beat Butterley by 22 runs
By Adam Harchuk - May 31 2003
Stapleford Town gain their third win of the season thanks to Andy Brears 53 and Adam Harchuk's 5 wickets. Some fine catching and fielding gave Stapleford victory by 22 runs ... >
Put into bat, Stapleford made a poor start when Stuart Bonsall swung one back through Ian Walker's gate and the left hander was bowled without scoring. Mark Fletcher joined Brear and they shared a fine stand of 75 for the 2nd wicket. Brear had moved onto his 50, but just after drinks, he played a rash shot and was bowled for 53 by Stuart Bonsall. Replacing Brear was Paul Fletcher, but he didnt last too long as Butterley debutant Probart took his off stump out of the ground for just 8, breaking the stump in the process! Harchuk then joined Mark Fletcher, who for some reason after an awesome start to his innings, found a sudden dip in form and when Probart bowled him for 34, just summed up the second half of Fletchers knock. Brackenbury joined Harchuk. Harchuk struck two very sweetly timed fours which just made the rope on a very slow outfield. When facing Patterson Harchuk appeared to have a lot of confidence and struck a well timed straight six, but next ball played a poor shot and the ball lobbed up to Knighton at square leg. Harchuk made 20. The rest of the innings was nothing to write home about as Brackenbury, Richmond, Parkinson, Clifford and Swain all went in single fingures. Only a defiant 12* from Jim Wright, edged Stapleford up to 149. Probart had creditable figures of 5-45 on his Butterley debut. But although the pitch was wet, Stapleford fell at least 30 runs short of what should have been achieved.
In reply Butterley appeared to want to head home early as openers Paul Fletcher and particularly Adam Harchuk strayed far too often and after 3 overs, 22 were on the board. It was Harchuks second over which was the turning point as he had A.Bonsall caught by Clifford at point, then 2 balls later arguably Butterleys best batsman Mark Dance nicked one behind to John Parkinson to leave Butterley at 28-2 after 4 overs. In Harchuks next over, he took a fine caught and bowled return, sending Patterson on his way for 12. Hanson then played at a wide one from Harchuk, nicking it behind, leaving Butterley at 31-4. He was replaced by Chris Knighton, who struck a fine four followed by a towering six but he played one shot to many when he chipped Harchuk to Richmond at mid-wicket giving the big man his first 1st team 5-wicket haul. Probart then fell to Paul Fletcher leaving Butterley in a real hole, but were given fresh hope as Beardsley started a real assult, clubbing some towering shots, but when Mark Fletcher replaced Harchuk(who had figures of 5-49), he had the hard hitting batsman caught behind off his first ball for a well struck 26, Butterleys top scorer. Stuart Bonsall stuck around hitting the bad ball, but his partners were exposed at the other end. Jones fell to a fine catch at 1st slip by Harchuk. Renshaw fell lbw to Paul Fletcher without scoring, but Bonsall found a good last wicket partner as he and Goddard looked to really dig in and press for a possibly victory, but not for the first time this season, Mr Golden arm Andy Brear gave himself a shot at the last pair, but he had Mark Fletcher to thank for the last wicket, as he took a stunning catch in the gully to end Stuart Bonsalls 24 and Butterleys run chase, giving Stapleford victory by 22 runs.

Final Result

Stapleford Town (27) 149 all out (Brear 53, M.Fletcher 34, Probart 5-45) beat Butterley Utd (7) 127 all out (Harchuk 5-49) by 22 runs.

Meanwhile the 2nd team didnt even get to Little Eaton as their match was called off due to unfit ground conditions.
