DD Duffield 2nd XI beat challenging Nutbook- 23/08/03
By Denis Saunders - September 1 2003
The Scoobs made the long trek through West Hallam to the borders of the 'badlands' of Ilson for this one. Earlier in the year Nutbrook had the better of a very close draw at Eyes Meadow a game the Scoobs maintained they 'should have won' well now was their chance to put it right. >
The same team as the previous week apart from Mace in for Elmo, Big Neil for Olse, Scatt for Wendel and James Saunders for Poyner who injured himself in the Dads v Lads game!!!!!

DD walked out with Nutbrook captain D. Essex in glorious sunshine to toss, tails for DD and he'd won the toss and stuck 'the Nutters' in. Duffield opened with Plod and the Ant and the young Nutbrook openers batted well and steadily for several overs scoring at a very good rate. The wicket was hard and fast and although it kept fairly low from one end it got up from the pavilion end. A lot of runs were scored through the slips and third man and indeed all around the wicket, for just about the first time this year the Scoobs fielding was 'poor to middling' and just about everyone made a mistake of some sort - some more than others as we shall see!

The innings progressed steadily at a good 4 an over. White bowled through and well for a couple of wickets. Mace replaced the Ant who had taken a couple of wickets and proceeded to take the wicket of the game. Essex is a good player and had just got into his stride when Mace tempted him with a floating pie. Damien waited, and waited and then resisted the devils fare and played it back up the pitch. This was enough though for Mace to move the Ant 20 yards round at deep mid-wicket, out of the shelter of the trees and away from the two J's. Later the same over came Dartsy's poison pie, Essex went for it and it soared into the outfield where an extraordinary thing happened, the Ant ran five yards and leaped into the air like.... well like a flying Ant and grasped the ball to his buxoms before landing heavily, causing tremors as far away as ....................(please fill in blank). Essex couldn't believe it - it was a very good catch, the truth is Ant could be a very good athlete if only - well it's all been said before so I won't bother this time.

The innings then progressed due to (Garth) Brookes and Haw taking it steady as they had lost 6 wickets, 2 each to Mace, Whitey and Ant. Scatt came on at the death and bowled really well, he took one wicket and should have had another when the bat hoisted one into the air and DD and the gerbil went for it. DD called 'mine'!! Dave stopped, DD stopped - good cricket this wasn't - sorry Scatt!. Big Neil caught another skier. DD chose to bowl Stevo at the death instead of Mace and he went for 32 in 2 overs! Nutbrook 180 for 8 at the end. Below par on a good track but Duffield have struggled with these type of scores before.

Tea was taken and jolly decent it was too. Stevo and DD debated long and hard over the batting order. Ten minutes later Ant and Dickie went to the crease. It was interesting to see the Nutbrook approach to the wicket which rather than 'full and straight' as demanded of the Duffield bowlers at all times, was short and hostile from one end and full from the other! The other Essex brother bowled a bouncer to Ant first ball, which surprised him so much he was nearly out - but his mis-hit went for 4 instead.

DIckie was out bowled and couldn't resist some afters with the bowler. Now I don't claim to be an expert on these things but afters at Ilson could be a dangerous option - only a suggestion Dickie? Ant batted well and tucked into the short stuff before holing out for 39. Scatt batted well with a revitalised Pete Turner and these two got the score to 93 after 15 when Scat was out the ball before drinks. DD joined Turner at the wicket and after one or two early scares (especially running and against their very good 12- year-old bowler Sam) they knocked the runs off in just 32 overs, GC 55 not and DD 37 not. I have to say coming in at five with a batting order to follow of Max, Darts, Stevo, Plod, Big Neil fills you with confidence and our batting for once looked pretty solid.

After the game Damien Essex was keen to arrange a friendly fixture next year and I have to say I am impressed with the way Nutbrook play the game and bring on the youngsters, some of who are very high quality. He also thought Clifton were the best side they had played and gave us some tips for both them and Rosehill. Let's see if they work in next weeks thrilling instalment........
