Duffield Cricket Club
37 runs Duffield 2nd XI Slip Up in Promotion Chase
By Dickie Stevenson - August 11 2003
Duffield travelled to West Park in Long Eaton looking to recover from their disappointing defeat against O&B in the cup the previous Sunday. >
With Gonzo taking a rest from the captaincy, Dirty Den assumed the tossing duties and found himself defeated by his Sawley counterpart who asked the Toffs to bat first.

Dickie and The Ant opened up as usual and got off to a good start. The Ant dispatched the elderly left armer for a couple of boundaries before Dickie tucked into a wayward first over from a the other opening bowler who fitted all the necessary stereotypes for entry into the DLF, Greg Roe will be knocking!

After another opening partnership over the 50 run mark by the in form pair the first wicket fell as the left armer induced a leading edge from Dickie who looked set for another big score. Pedro Turner joined the Ant at the crease and soon departed courtesy of an LBW decision by the home umpire, which was queried by Dogtanion on his arrival back at the shed. Dirty Den, fresh from his delightful boundary in the one's also suffered the indignation of a short stay at the crease as he was caught behind before he'd had chance to impose himself.

Nick Bygraves was next in with his eyebrow freshly trimmed in the style of Abs and was quickly on his way back to the hutch as he chipped an easy catch to short leg, he was followed shortly afterwards by Gonzo, leaving the Toffs in deep trouble with a slightly weaker batting line up than usual.

The Ant perished as he got a leading edge to a ball from a bowler that ran in like Dilley but delivered at a much more friendly pace, he had amassed 49.

Bish was next in and set about rebuilding the innings with some good shots and plenty of determination as he made a personal 2nd team best of 39. Plod and Bannaman ably supported him before his poles were shattered by a young bowler who was mistakenly under the impression that he possessed some serious pace!

The innings closed when young Adam was unfortunately run out after a mix up with Elmo, leaving Sawley 139 to win.

The Ant and Gonzo opened the bowling looking to take some early wickets. Luck was not on their side as the openers played some streaky shots and in the case of the youth with the sun hat some dreadful smears to the leg side. Throughout his innings, that unbelievably amassed 49 runs, he played one scoring shot on the off side, electing to try and hit everything through midwicket. In most cases the ball squirted off the inside edge or dropped short of a fielder, several deliveries missed the off stump by inches as the batsman swung wildly. The Ant suggested that rounders would be the batsmen's perfect sport! To compound matters, he was dropped early on by Dickie on the boundary, sorry Gonz.

Plod White came into the attack and picked up a wicket courtesy of a well-held catch by young Adam. Poyner also took a wicket and could have had several more as the elderly opening batsman continually edged him through the slip cordon. The Ant suggested to the batsman in question that he go and sit with the amenable scorer, only to find out the young lady in question was the batsmen's daughter. "Good production" was The Ant's response!

Sawley eventually reached Duffield's below par total with plenty to spare. One of the warmest days of the year proved draining for the Duffield troops, they will need to improve all sides of their game if the promotion challenge is to be realised.

As the players left the field, The Ant informed the remaining opposition batsmen of their extreme good fortune and general lack of ability. A exchange of colourful verbals ensued!

In terms of the Tottie Meter, readings were sustained at a high level by the aforementioned opposition scorer, dressed in a skimpy bikini throughout the afternoon.
