Duffield Cricket Club
Back to Form Duffield 2nd XI Continue Amazing Run in the Cup
By Dave Wood - June 5 2003
Duffield 2nd XI took their superb form north this as they took on Staveley Welfare in this cup fixture. Home of one of the greatest teas in Derbyshire, Staveley looked to take the game to Duffield who so far this season had won every game they had played in. >
Some amazing results for the club over the weekend. Oh yes, and the Scoobies recording another 2 regulation victories as well.

Sunday, the sun was shinning and the boys were looking to enjoy the day and a break from the pressure cooker atmosphere at the summit of the league.

Stevo strode out to the middle for the toss having already done his Geoffrey Boycott, minus the panama, a few minutes earlier. The toss was won and the home captain was shocked when he was advised of Duffields decision to bat first. The Alex Ferguson mind games had begun. But who was going to end the day as a Sir and who was going to end it an Arsene only time would tell.

PowerPoint and Mr Wendel strode out to the middle and awaited the first ball. It was quick, Wendel was to be on full alert for the rest of the over. A few runs were added in the next couple before Wendel inside edged on to his stumps to bring an early end to his new bats virgin innings. Pete Turner was next in, fortunately he had taken off the cycling shorts he had arrived in and replaced them with the more conventional cricket whites, and the effort was not to be in vein. Immediately Turner looked majestic, timing the ball impeccably with 1 straight drive passed the bowler a sheer delight.

PowerPoint was not to be outdone, playing some beautiful shots to all parts of the ground. The two veterans looked like they wanted to spend all afternoon out there. Dennis reached his 2nd half century of the season in controversial fashion having been accredited 4 runs that Turner later felt should have been his, it was not to matter as Turner soon made his 50. Saunders then repeated his efforts from last week, hitting a fierce straight drive that the bowler touched on to the stumps leaving PT stranded. Saunders was to eventually fall for 72 with his stumps scattered by the quicky.

Well, what can be said of the middle order, not a lot in all honesty. Wickets were lost at regular intervals, with the boys keeping their spirits up with some excellent fishing (some real beauties were netted). Barry White returned to the dressing room slightly annoyed to say the least, after Bygraves senior ran him out. I can not pass comment, as I did not see the incident although the steam coming out of Barrys ears made me think that Bygraves senior can expect a letter from the Crown Prosecution Service within the next 28 days!!!

Duffield were looking like they were not going to make the 200 that looked a certainty a matter of a few overs earlier. At the death an invaluable partnership of 31 between Bishop and Wood took the score from 180 for 8 to 211 for 8 at the close with Bishop 1 n.o and Wood 24 n.o. In amongst which was a six into the car park and an all run five which left the two tale-enders calling for the oxygen masks.

Tea was taken, wow, a feast that was better than I have seen at a number of weddings. Talk in the camp was of the quicky that had taken a 5 - 32 being allowed to bowl from 21 yards by the home umpire throughout.

The home teams reply started well with the openers not looking in serious trouble and passing the 50 mark in quick time. Mason took the 1st wicket bringing the home teams answer to David Gower to the crease (silver hair the only resemblance) he was to go on to make 46. Once these 2 batsmen had gone the run chase soon started to look beyond the home team. Wickets fell regularly amongst some tight bowling from Mason (3 for 45), Turner (2 for 28) and White (1 for 41) who also dropped 2 catches it must be said.

Eventually as the clouds were gathering overhead the innings ended 21 runs short on 190 for 7. The Scoobies remain unbeaten and in confident mood.

The totty meter (I hope you are happy now I have spelt it correctly for you Bish! - you were obviously wearing your glasses when you read the report last week), was fairly quiet (reprimand noted from Barry about my comments in last weeks report). That brings me nicely on to the loss of Harolds glasses after the match. He got 4 of us looking all round the changing room for his specs for about 5 minutes. THEN, he checked his back pocket to find that he had sat on them and bent them, genius.

Alfreton away in the next round. PC White left a happy man knowing he has an earlier than expected opportunity to face the team he left to join Duffield only last season.
