Adam Short lead his Sunday XI to victory against a useful and highly experienced Grasshoppers side. Having lost the toss Duffield were asked to field first, and opened up with Kris Elliot and Mike Poyner. Kris bowled with good pace and lateral movement, though in his 6 overs couldnt find a wicket. Mike Poyner on the other hand dismissed the Grasshoppers openers in his first 5 overs. Dave Wood was next to join the Duffield attack, and he too managed to pick up a wicket during his 6 over spell. Ever reliable Richard Jordan then threw down some of his breaks, and he kept the score down and picked up a wicket when the batsman skied one to Mike Poyner on the boundary. Evergreen Dick Mills replaced son-in-law Dave Wood and it wasnt long before one of his half volleys snuck through the gate. Dick, competitive as ever was even heard to mumble a few choice words, and Short is seriously considering his position in the Sunday XI....there is no room for sledging on a Sunday!!!! Skipper Adam Short replaced Jordan and picked up a wicket in his first over. Mills dropped one behind the stumps from Short's second over as did Elliot. In fact Elliot was having a shocker in the field, too much sauce from the night before no doubt!!!! The heavens opened and tea was taken......Mr Antill did himself proud with the tea selection, aided by John and June. Sargeant Sims and Phil Mason came down to sample some of Duffield's finest sauce, as did Robin Stevenson, Dave Stevenson, Liz Adams and Neil Armstrong. Play resumed after tea, and it didnt take too long for Graham Wenden to do the damage. Two wickets from his leg breaks wrapped up the Grasshoppers innings, having scored 125 all out. Duffield opened up with the useful pairing of Phil Jordan and Chris Mills. Though excellent bowling from the Chapman brothers (they of Quarndon fame) ensured that Duffield wouldnt have things their own way. In fact Paul Chapman (captain for the day) bowled Chris Mills, with the batsman only scoring 10. Graham Wenden was next in, and despite an entertaining flurry was out caught and bowled. Young Sam Hamilton was next to the crease, and having looked comfortable and indeed confident, tried to send his third ball over Little Eaton, and he was bowled. Kris Elliot then went to the crease, he had much to make up for his shocking performance in the field. He should have been out for a duck, but somehow rode his luck and went on to score a quickire 25. At the other end Phil Jordan was showing his vast array of shots, and ended the match 63 not out. So Duffield reached their target with 7 overs remaining. All the jobs were complete with a satisfactory outcome. And a successful night behing the bar, where such stars as Gary Myers and Paul Lynn joined in with the post match boozing. No Duffield weekend is complete without a visit to our major sponsors the Viceroy for some top notch cuisine. The night wrapped up at 10.30pm, and home to bed to watch West Ham suffer!!!! No Sunday fixture next weekend as the 2nds are away at Castle Donington. Anyone fancy joining Adam Short and Kris Elliot for a day on the sauce in Castle Donington, please get in touch!!!!!
